Cletus Seldin to return in March after second shoulder surgery
- Updated: February 4, 2016
Undefeated junior welterweight Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (17-0, 14 knockouts) returns to the ring on March 5 against Orlando Vazquez (18-7-1, 12 KOs) in a scheduled 10-rounder at the Paramount Theatre on Long Island, Seldin promoter Joe DeGuardia told RingTV.com. The straight-ahead Seldin hasn’t fought since June of last year after having reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder. Seldin also took time off to have surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff and labrum on his right shoulder in 2013, forcing him to the sideline for nine months. But DeGuardia says he’s fully healed and ready to make a splash this year. The Bronx-based promoter often compares the trajectory of Seldin’s career to fellow Long Island-boxer Chris Algieri in that they both got their starts at the Paramount Theatre under DeGuardia. Algieri has graduated to bigger fights while Seldin will make his move soon, the promoter insists. “He’s fighting at the Paramount until I do the same thing I did with Chris,” DeGuardia said. “I’m going to break him out in a nice big fight. I’m looking toward the end of the year. He’s ready. He would have been already if it wasn’t for his shoulder.” Mitch Abramson can be reached at [email protected] or on Twitter at @Mabramson13 SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to the print and digital editions of THE RING Magazine by clicking here.
