Yankees acquire closer Aroldis Chapman in trade with Reds
- Updated: December 29, 2015

The Yankees trade for Reds closer Aroldis Chapman.
The Yankees pulled off a stunning offseason move Monday by acquiring closer Aroldis Chapman in a trade with the Reds.
New York sent pitchers Caleb Cotham and Rookie Davis, along with infielders Eric Jagielo and Tony Renda, to Cincinnati for Chapman – a four-time All-Star who the Reds had been trying to unload for weeks.
Just last month they agreed to trade Chapman to the Dodgers, a deal that ultimately fell through after the lefty fireballer had been accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend. Police eventually decided against pressing charges, citing “insufficient evidence.”
Major League Baseball, however, can still dole out punishment to Chapman under its new domestic violence policy.
MLB is investigating the Oct. 30 incident in which Chapman allegedly pushed his girlfriend against a wall and choked her at his Davie, Fla. home after the couple argued over something the girlfriend saw on his phone.
Chapman also allegedly fired his gun eight times in his garage after the incident. No arrests were made at the time because of conflicting stories from both parties and lack of cooperation, according to police.
Chapman joins a stacked Yankees bullpen that already includes Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller – last season’s Mariano Rivera Award winner, given to the American League’s best reliever.
