White Broncos jerseys in play for Super Bowl 50
- Updated: January 26, 2016

After a long history of woes in orange jerseys, the Denver Broncos will wear white for the Super Bowl.
If you’re a Denver Broncos fan, orange you glad they’re wearing white?
Broncos legend and current General Manager John Elway made the call Monday, telling reporters that the team would be giving in to superstition.
“We’ve had Super Bowl success in our white uniforms, and we’re looking forward to wearing them again in Super Bowl 50,” he said succinctly.
The Broncos have tied an NFL record by advancing to their eighth Super Bowl, but they are 0-4 when donning the orange jerseys.

Elway has some first-hand experience with the woes of wearing orange. He was under center for two of those four losses, which were all routs. History has an uncanny way of repeating itself and sports curses are nothing to be trifled with, so Elway and the Broncos aren’t taking any chances.
Here is a look back at the four beatings the orange-clad Broncos have taken in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XII (Cowboys win 27-10)
The numbers don’t lie.
Take a look through these losses and notice a trend. In all but one of them, the Broncos scored just 10 points. In the other, they put up eight. In this defeat at the hands of Dallas, Denver turned the ball over eight times. Four interceptions by QB Craig Morton, four fumbles by the offense.
But those even and similar numbers don’t reflect the chaos that came with four terrible losses in orange.

Super Bowl XXII (Washington wins 42-10)
The curse of the orange was in its early stages for this Washington demolition.
Denver had lost only one previous Super Bowl wearing the color, and Elway thought nothing of it with his team leading Washington 10-0 heading into the second quarter.
But those were the only points they would score.
Washington put up 42 unanswered, led by rookie running back Timmy Smith, who rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
The six scores set a Super Bowl record, and the orange spell was fast becoming more than mere superstition.

Super Bowl XXIV (49ers win 55-10)

The Jerry Rice/Joe Montana combination obliterated Denver in Super Bowl XXIV.
If Elway thought things couldn’t get any worse than a 32-point Super Bowl loss, the 49ers taught him a lesson.
Once again, Elway and his Broncos could only muster up 10 points, and the defense was porous as a sponge when faced with the Joe Montana/Jerry Rice combination.
The Hall of Fame wide receiver caught three touchdown passes, and Montana threw for five scores without an interception.
On the flip side, Elway threw for just 108 yards, tossed two picks and was sacked four times.
Talk about apples and oranges.
Super Bowl XLVIII (Seahawks win 43-8)
There was an aura of incredulity surrounding this game from the start.
All eyes were on Richard Sherman after his NFC championship outburst, and then he didn’t make a sound in the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning was vigorously preparing for freezing New Jersey temperatures, but it ended up being an uncharacteristically mild February day. On the very first Denver snap, Manny Ramirez chucked the ball over Manning’s head and Seattle was on the board with a safety.

A botched snap turned into a Seattle safety on the first play of Super Bowl XLVIII.
Then the wheels came off.
Seattle was relentless all game, and a 69-yard pick six thrown by Manning made the score 22-0 in the second quarter.
