Round 3 – Walker and Hilliard retain the lead on the Murray

The third round of the Murray River Junior Masters kicked of this morning at Tocumwal GC but with the mercury reaching into the 40’s the round was shortened to nine holes today and tomorrow for a 54-hole tournament. Both Toby Walker and Alex Hillaird retained the leads in the boys and girls overall sections but with a number of players nipping at their heels they will still need to bring their a-game tomorrow morning.

Walker fired one under today to sit at two under-par and just a single shot ahead Jamie Scapin and Dale Crothers. Both Scapin and Crothers made up some ground on the overnight frontrunner after they signed for rounds of two and three under par respectively. After a disappointing second round Cooper Gill will find himself in the mix once again when he starts tomorrow three behind Walker.

Meanwhile Alex Hillaird will take a four shot advantage into tomorrow’s final nine holes after the Sandhurst member dropped one shot from her 36-hole tally to sit at three under-par. Alizza Hetherington continues to apply the pressure to Hilliard and will be looking to narrow the gap further when she tees it up four shots in arrears of the leader. Linley Ooi and Steffanie Vogel will be looking to hit the ground running in the morning if they are to have any chance of reducing their seven stroke deficit.

Round 2 – Hilliard continues sizzling form

The Murray River Junior Masters reconvened for the second round at Cobram-Barooga Golf Club this morning. Even though the field started at 7:30am the 116 strong field felt the heat the temperatures continued to soar into the mid 30’s.

Alex Hilliard was seemingly unfazed by not only the heat but also the gusty northerly as she continued to broaden the gap with a superb round of two under-par 71. Alex now sits five shots clear of Alizza Hetherington on five under-par at the halfway mark. Linley Ooi and local Steffanie Vogel moved up the leader board after solid rounds today to find themselves in the final group tomorrow.  

Toby Walker’s purple patch this year is continuing following a level par round of 72 to be in the outright lead at one under-par inthe boys section. Mooroopna’s Jamie Scapin had an impressive two under 70 to leapfrog many of his competitors and move his way into joint second place along with Antony Majstorovic on a 36 hole tally of 145. Dale Crothers is one shot further adrift after conductive rounds of 73.

Nathan Blakmore has overtaken the round one leader to hold the outright honours in the overall handicap section. The 15 marker fired a brilliant round of 62 nett to sit nicely alongside his opening round of 67. Rhys Rigoni came in with today best score of 60 to be in outright second.

The third round will move to Tocumwal GC tomorrow morning with another early start in an attempt to beat the heat.

Round 1 – Hilliard runs hot at the Murray River Junior Masters

The opening round of the 2015 Murray River Junior Masters kicked of this morning at Cobram-Barooga Golf Club on the well-known Old Course. The Old Course is a traditional work of art where the magnificent couch fairways are framed by towering redgum and pine trees with fast and true greens. Conditions were relatively calm and conductive for good scoring but the record braking field of 116 players felt the heat as the day progressed into the afternoon and the mercury rose into the mid 30’s. Temperatures will continue to increase over the weekend with 40 degree days expected.

A cluster of three players comprising of Cooper Gill, Antony Majstorovic and Toby Walker are tied at the top of the boy’s leader board after rounds of one under-par 71. Walker’s recent form has been particularly impressive with wins at the SAJG Signature Tournament only a few weeks back as well as the Peninsula Junior Open in September. Majstorovic will be looking to add the Murray River Junior Masters to his Yarrawonga title that he captured in a playoff in the middle of this year with Cooper also looking to take home his biggest victory to date. 

In the girls section, Alex Hilliard has set herself with a commanding lead following her course record round of three under-par 70. The one marker from Sandhurst was steady all day with her only blemish coming at her first hole before making four birdies at holes 3, 4, 11 and 15. Tarsha Hawley and Alizza Hetherington are four shot back on 74.

In the overall nett trophy, Matthew Dunne played superbly for a round that bettered his handicap by whopping eight shots. The Kingston Heath member will tee it up in the second round at Cobram-Barooga two shots ahead of his nearest competitors.   

Tomorrows round will be played at Cobram-Barooga at 7:30am before moving to Tocumwal for the weekend.
