Giants wideout Victor Cruz ran on the practice field grass for the first time since suffering a calf injury during training camp, and maintained that he was pain free afterward. He noted swelling was down and he felt closer to a return.

“The short week leaves us a little handicapped,” he said.

Cruz and the team’s training staff will monitor how he reacts Wednesday morning. The Giants square off against Washington Thursday night at MetLife Stadium. The Giants have lost their first two games as Cruz missed both with the injury.

“I’ve been patient for 11 months now,” Cruz said, referring to the time it has taken him to rehabilitate first his knee injury and now the calf setback.

The Jets will cut the roster down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon.

With the regular season around the corner, rookie Jets GM Mike Maccagnan must whittle down the roster to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday. The team faces some tough decisions at wide receiver, inside linebacker, offensive line and defensive line heading into Saturday.

Perhaps the biggest name on the roster bubble heading into Saturday is veteran outside linebacker Jason Babin, who, at the age of 35, could be cut. However, Babin is more likely to stick now with Calvin Pace and Lorenzo Mauldin banged up.

It will also be worth monitoring the temporary backup quarterback competition between Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson.

2014 fourth-round picks Shaq Evans and Dakota Dozier are possibilities to be released as well, and the team likely will have to choose to keep two out of three between Jamari Lattimore, Erin Henderson and Joe Mays.

Eddie Lacy should once again be a factor in for the high-powered Packers.

3 UP

Eddie Lacy, Packers

The Packers’ third-year back has been a consistent fantasy performer in his first two years, topping 1,000 rushing yards, 35 catches and 10 TDs in each season, and he could see his role grow even more in Year 3. Lacy has yet to post a 320-touch season, and that may never happen with Aaron Rodgers running the team. But don’t be surprised if Lacy complements his 1,000-yard rushing totals with a bigger role as a dumpoff receiver for Rodgers, who will now function without Jordy Nelson (torn ACL). The Pack still has plenty of weapons, but Lacy very well could post Le’Veon Bell-like numbers as a receiver out of the backfield. And he’ll continue to be the top goal-line option for a team destined to score points.

Joseph Randle, Cowboys

Randle is the heir apparent to DeMarco Murray as Dallas’ feature back, and he could be even better than Murray. Don’t expect Randle to shoulder quite the same massive workload, but know that he’ll run behind the NFL’s finest offensive line, and he has explosive ability (6.7 yards per carry last season).

Randle will factor more in the pass game than anyone expects, too; sure, he has just 12 career catches, but he had at least 28 catches in each of his last two years at Oklahoma State. This is a youngster with the skills of a complete back, and the Cowboys removed the final barrier to his fantasy stardom in late August, when they announced he will be a top goal-line option.

Jeremy Hill, Bengals

Nobody views Hill in the elite class of fantasy rushers, in large part because he shares time with jitterbug Gio Bernard. But don’t be surprised if the second-year bulldozer piledrives his way into that upper echelon. His skills are obvious: He’s a powerful, north-south runner who averaged 5.1 yards per carry, and he’s easily the finest goal-line option that Cincinnati has (nine TDs).

In A.J. Green and Mohamed Sanu, the Bengals have the weapons to move the ball, too, so expect Hill to get plenty of chances to score. If you miss the elite runners, make it a point to target Jeremy Hill.

3 DOWN

LeSean McCoy, Bills

Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice, all once elite performers, never managed a 1,000-yard rushing season with 4.0 yards per carry after eclipsing the 1,500-touch plateau. And Shady? He has 1,761 career touches.

So while McCoy may seem like a certain first-round pick now that he’s in Buffalo and the focal point of Rex Ryan’s ground-and-pound offense, tread wearily. He’s endured a lot of wear-and-tear in his career, and his preseason hamstring injury is just the latest reminder. Oh, and he’ll face stacked defenses with the Bills, who feature no passing game to speak of.

So sure the running back in Rex Ryan’s offense seems like a sure thing. But buyer beware.

DeMarco Murray, Eagles

Speaking of workload, how about ex-Cowboy Murray, who piled up a whopping 449 touches in Dallas last season. Sure, Murray’s a fine back, and at a thick 6-0, 217 pounds, he seems built to be a workhorse.

But before last season, he’d struggled mightily to stay healthy, dating back to his college days. Does one dominant season really change that?

Don’t count on it. And don’t be so sure we know what his role will be with the Eagles, either. Chip Kelly added both Murray and Ryan Mathews this offseason, and with the pace of his offense, it may be better for both backs to split the carries. Murray could repeat last year’s season, sure. Or he could return to his injury-prone roots.

Rashad Jennings, Giants

The Giants won’t ask Jennings to carry their load, and you shouldn’t either. In East Rutherford, this is shaping up to be a backfield by committee, with Jennings a starter in name only. He’ll share touches with Andre Williams and ex-Patriot Shane Vereen, who should pick up most of the third-down action.

All of that is good for Jennings, too, since the veteran has never shown he can be a workhorse. Jennings has never had a 200-touch season, and he won’t now, at age 30. If you draft him and he gets off to a hot start (as he did last year) sell high.

1 TO WATCH

Latavius Murray, Raiders

The third-year Oakland runner didn’t see significant action until the final five games of last season, and all he did was average 74 rushing yards per game, score a pair of touchdowns, and add 11 catches in that limited action.

The 2013 sixth-round pick has a power frame (6-2, 230 pounds), and he’s the perfect option to carry the load as quarterback Derek Carr matures. He’s looked solid in the preseason, too, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. And really, who’s going to compete with him for carries in Oakland? Trent Richardson?

There’s an RB2 here, and there’s the potential for much, much more, too.

The Giants need to cut their roster down to 53 players by 4 p.m. on Satuday.

An NFL coach never thinks his final roster cuts are easy, but this year’s chore seems particularly difficult for the Giants. And it’s not just that this “win or else” season makes Tom Coughlin’s final roster selections all the more important.

It’s the fact that so many players on his roster are hurt.

At one point more than 21 percent of his players were reporting injuries. On Thursday night, that number was down to 18.7 percent, after 12 of his 75 players were unable to play and two more got hurt during the game. And many of them – like DE Robert Ayers, DE Cullen Jenkins, LB Jon Beason, LB Jonathan Casillas, S Jeromy Miles, K Josh Brown and WR Victor Cruz – are pretty important. If they are at all iffy for the Sept. 13 season opener, their replacements must stick around.

Those are just some of the complicating factors as Coughlin ponders the 22 moves he needs to make to cut his roster down from 75 to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Though nothing officially will be done until that time, some of the moves will begin to leak out on Saturday morning.

So keep checking back because we’ll keep a running list of the Giants’ moves here all day long:

American Heritage running back Adam Reed is 4-foot-5, 95 pounds.

Running backs are known for being undersized, and Adam Reed fully embodies that stereotype.

All 95 pounds of him.

The 17-year-old senior is listed at 4’5″ and 95 pounds by MaxPreps and is the fifth-string running back at American Heritage High School in Plantation, FL, according to the Miami Herald.

Still, his teammates have no hesitations when they hand the ball off to him.

“I’m a little undersized, but it’s, whatever,” Reed told the Herald. “I don’t let my size stop me from doing anything.”

As his game footage shows, Reed has no fear when the ball is tucked under his arm. He motors straight into the torsos of guys that tower over him.

American Heritage’s football program is ranked No. 19 nationally according to MaxPreps, and though Reed has yet to enter a varsity game this season, he did see game action with the middle school and junior varsity teams.

While there are no official records for the shortest player to play in a high school game according to the Herald, Reed could be making history if he gets any playing time for the varsity.

Reed has no fear when he lines up next to his teammates.

His coach told the Herald that he wasn’t sure yet whether or not Reed would see the field.

“But I have some plans and ideas to get him involved because he sacrificed the way everybody else sacrificed,” Coach Rumph said.
