Alex Rios provided the spark for the Royals, but the Indians set off the fireworks.

Rios’ solo homer in the fifth inning was mistakenly celebrated by an Indians stadium employee who apparently couldn’t tell up from down — Rios and KC were the visiting team, batting in the top of the fifth, when he set off the pyrotechnics.

TV cameras caught the distraught fireworks technician with his hands clutching his head after his quick-trigger mistake, which prompted a chorus of boos from the small crowd. Rios never played for the Indians, so the tech doesn’t really have much of an excuse to fall back on.

“It was nice,” Rios joked about the unexpected explosion. “It’s the first time that’s happened to me in a road game. When I heard all the screams, it crossed my mind that they somehow called it foul. It shook me a little bit. It caught me off-guard. When I was rounding second, I heard people screaming and that’s when I thought something happened, but it’s all good.”

Luckily, no fingers were harmed in this blown fireworks show.

Todd Hundley hits his 41st homer of the year, a 3 run shot to tie the game at 5-5, to set new club record for a catcher.

(Originally published by the Daily News on September 15, 1996. This story was written by Thomas Hill.)

Todd Hundley knew he was eventually going to provide the Mets’ final dramatic moment of this season. But finding a proper time and place for an achievement that dwarfed everything else he had ever done was important, too.

Somehow, in the middle of a cool and quiet late summer afternoon at Shea yesterday, Hundley suddenly discovered his stage was set. He recognized the chance, seized it and created an epic event.

With a national television audience watching a game carrying playoff implications for the defending world champion Braves, Hundley hit his 41st home and grabbed sole possession of the single season major-league record for home runs by a catcher. He snapped a tie he created last Sunday with Roy Campanella, who hit 40 in 1953.

Hundley’s three-run homer off Greg McMichael with two outs in the seventh completed the Mets’ comeback from a five-run deficit. The Mets eventually beat the braves, 6-5 in the 12th inning, when Lance Johnson drove home Matt Franco from second with a one-out single center.

“That’s the way you want to end that game,” Johnson

Nothing could match Hundley’s home run for sheer theatrics, though. He fell behind 0-2 and then drove an outside fastball from McMichael deep to the opposite field. The ball stopped carrying only when it struck a rotating advertisement for Dunkin Donuts that hangs above the fence in the left-field corner. Hundly’s homer, which traveled an estimated 353 feet, was just the third on he could recall hitting to left field batting left handed.

McMichael credited Hundley for hitting a tough pitch, a fastball designed only to set up an inside changeup. At first McMichael thought Hundley had hit only a deep fly ball. “But it kept going,” he said. Hundley has 14 games left to add to his record.

“I don’t think I’m done,” said Hundley, the switch hitter beside Mickey Mantle to hit 40 home runs in a season. “I’m not going to go out and pop off and put more pressure on myself. But getting that one off me is like getting a house lifted off my shoulders.”

Braves left fielder Jermaine Dye picked up the ball after it bounced back onto the field and flipped it into the crowd. With the help of stadium security personnel, the Mets contacted the fan who caught the ball – 17-year-old Keith Shell of Flushing – and invited him to a post-game news conference, where he presented it to Hundley in exchange for an autographed bat.

As he has through most of his record pursuit, Hundley remained stoic when he reached his destination. He was expressionless as he trotted slowly around the bases following the blast.

“I wanted to be professional about it,” Hundley said. “I was not going to jump up and down like we just won the World Series, and show somebody up. I was thinking more of the score. I was thinking ‘Dog gone, here we go’.

“I was not going to show McMichael up and do a circus act on the bases. Once I got to home plate was the time to celebrate, not on the bases.”

Johnson, who was on third when the home run came, was the first to greet Hundley at the plate with a two-handed high five. Bernard Gilkey, who had been on second, offered Hundley a hug.

And then, as they did in Atlanta last Sunday when Hundley hit home run No. 40, the rest of the Mets poured from the dugout and formed an impromptu receiving line. A crowd announced at 22,857 stood and roared all through the on-field celebrations.

Thunderous waves of applause, unheard at Shea most of this unfulfilling season, continued after Hundley descended into the dugout. Within a minute, he responded by climbing back into view and raising his right arm, batting helmet held aloft.

Hundley needed no prodding to take the first curtain call of his career, a move perfected a decade ago by Gary Carter, the man Hundley has replaced as the Mets’ most powerful catcher.

“I wanted to stand there for a while, but we had to get on with the game,” Hundley said. “I’ve been through a lot with the fans here. I’ve gone from getting booed by 40,000 to getting a standing ovation from 20,000 or 30,000.”

Let’s admit it: between constant pitching changes and instant replay, sometimes baseball can make you sleepy.

On Wednesday night, Chris Davis woke one drowsy fan up with a mammoth walk-off home run in the 11th inning against the Rays.

Davis’ slam landed several rows up the left-center field bleachers at Camden Yards, where cameras caught one fan casually napping toward the top of the section.

The roar from the crowd appeared to wake the guy as he turned around to see what the commotion was about before the ball landed nearby.

Most of the fans who applauded David Wright on Friday night in his first at-bat at Citi Field in months were standing by the time he got to the plate to face Boston’s Henry Owens. Wright was a study in concentration, though, loosening up on his way to the batter’s box.

Owens stepped off the mound, a classy gesture to let Wright enjoy a nice moment. Wright popped up on the first pitch, which short-circuited it a bit.

Still, it was clear that everyone in the stands knew it was Wright’s first game in his home park since April 14 due to back problems.

“Unbelievable,” Wright said after going 2-for-5 in the Mets’ 6-4 10-inning loss to the Red Sox. “You dream and think and play it out in your mind how it’s gonna be . . . and this surpassed everything, just how cool that was. I can’t thank the fans enough for that support, that ovation. It kind of got me off my game a little bit.”

Wright already had played three games since his return from spinal stenosis, but they were all at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park earlier this week.

“We’re not allowed to throw flowers on the field here, but he will get an extremely great reception,” Terry Collins predicted before the game.

“He is the face of the team. He is the star.”

Collins indicated that Wright likely will be rested on Saturday, but the third baseman added he then hopes to play “the rest of the home stand.”

Wright singled twice and scored from first when Boston right fielder Rusney Castillo misplayed Michael Cuddyer’s single in the fifth.

“That’s a long way, a lot longer than I remembered,” Wright said.

INS AND OUTS
Center fielder Juan Lagares saw the ball hit the black wall above the orange line and admitted he was surprised Boston’s Blake Swihart was sprinting around the bases for what was ruled a tiebreaking inside-the-park homer in the 10th inning.

“I’m 100% that was gone all the way,” Lagares said. “It hit over the line and that’s why the ball came back hard.”

Asked if he’d ever hit an inside-the-parker before, Swihart said, “Nope, still haven’t.”

SCORING CHANGE
MLB made a scoring change from the Aug. 18 game in Baltimore, giving Lucas Duda an error on what originally was scored a single by Steve Clevenger. The two earned runs originally charged to reliever Tyler Clippard are now unearned. His ERA with the Mets is down to 0.55 after another scoreless inning Friday night.

INJURY STUFF
Boston DH David Ortiz played first base but was removed in the eighth with left-heel tightness. Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) didn’t play and is day-to-day . . . Collins said Duda (back) has resumed “tracking” pitches in the batting cage, “but he’s not swinging yet.”

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays catcher Curt Casali left Tuesday night’s 11-7 loss against the Minnesota Twins after straining his left hamstring running the bases on his home run.

Casali appeared to take an awkward step near first base after hitting his 10th homer — ninth since the All-Star break — in the fifth inning. He slowly finished his trip around the bases with a slight limp before heading toward the clubhouse.

“It was really weird,” Casali said. “It’s never happened to me. I’ve never seen it. It stinks right now. On top of a loss, it’s not a good day.”

Casali will have an MRI exam Wednesday.

“It just started getting tight on me,” he said. “It didn’t feel very good going around the bases. Didn’t want to injure it more. Took as it as slow as I could. I had to get around the bases somehow.”

Rene Rivera replaced Casali.

The Mets third baseman blasted a long home run into the upper deck in left field in his first at-bat back from the disabled list with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Wright, who was introduced pregame with a picture of utility infielder Kelly Johnson, crushed a 1-1 pitch Phillies left-hander Adam Morgan.

ORIOLES 5, METS 4

BALTIMORE — It was Carlos Torres’ turn this time.

The Mets bullpen has taken its lumps over the last week, and Wednesday night it absorbed another blow. Torres gave up a home run to Henry Urrutia in the bottom of the ninth as the Mets fell to the Orioles, 5-4, at Camden Yards, splitting the two-game series.

“It was exactly where I wanted it. It called for a fastball up, I threw the fastball up,” said Torres, who allowed two runs in 1.1 innings against the Pirates on Sunday.

“These guys unfortunately have seen (Noah) Syndergaard and (Jacob) deGrom, so unfortunately my fastball didn’t seem like their fastball. The guy hit it.”

The Orioles hose down Henry Urrutia as the left fielder hits his first career home run at the perfect time.

The Mets (64-56) lost for the fourth time in five games, and their lead over Washington in the NL East was reduced to 3.5 games. The Orioles (61-58) snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Mets dating back to 2010.

Mets starter Noah Syndergaard fought through a rough first inning and was chased early in the sixth as he continued to struggle on the road. Daniel Murphy and Wilmer Flores each had a home run and an RBI single.

It was the bullpen that came up short. Before Torres gave up the game-winner, Hansel Robles blew a one-run lead when he gave up a solo, game-tying home run in the seventh to Adam Jones. Torres came in with the game tied at 4, and Urrutia, the Orioles’ rookie left fielder from Cuba, launched his second pitch into the left-center field seats for his first major league home run.

The Mets’ last four losses have all been charged to relievers. The bullpen has now given up 13 earned runs in its last 15 innings pitched.

Noah Syndergaard struggles through five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Terry Collins had to turn to his bullpen early Wednesday because Syndergaard got in trouble quickly and his pitch count ballooned. The pitcher who dominates at Citi Field, where he is 7-1 with a 1.82 ERA, disappears when he gets outside of Queens; on the road, Syndergaard is 0-5 with a 5.05 ERA. In an effort to change his fortunes on Wednesday, he tweaked the timing of his pregame warmup, pushing it up about eight minutes to cut down on the amount of time he sits between throwing in the bullpen and the first pitch.

Still Syndergaard got into instant trouble, with Manny Machado smashing a first-pitch, 96-mph fastball for a leadoff double to right center. Gerardo Parra then connected with a curveball for a single to left before Syndergaard walked Adam Jones to load the bases with no outs.

Syndergaard battled back and dropped a nasty curveball on a 3-2 count to Orioles slugger Chris Davis to strike him out swinging and coaxed a double-play ground ball out of Jonathan Schoop to escape unscathed.

In the fourth, Syndergaard gave up a leadoff double to Jones and an RBI single to Steve Clevenger. With Syndergaard’s pitch count bloated, his pitches were suddenly up in the sixth. He gave up a leadoff double to Davis and then a two-run home run to left by Schoop to tie the game. Clevenger followed with a single to right center and that was the end of Syndergaard’s night.

Daniel Murphy gets the Mets off to a quick start with a home run, but they are unable to hold any leads.Patrick Semansky/AP

Daniel Murphy gets the Mets off to a quick start with a home run, but they are unable to hold any leads.

“I feel about as confident as home, I am just not getting the results,” he said. “I thought tonight was a step in the right direction.

. . . The curveball to Schoop, well, this is the big leagues, that is what he is paid to do.”

That lesson proved costly for the Mets. Collins used Logan Verrett, who was limited to one inning because he could be making a spot start for Matt Harvey, to clean up the sixth. Then it became a gamble.

Beyond Tyler Clippard, who pitched a scoreless eighth, and closer Jeurys Familia, Collins has struggled to get consistent outs from his bullpen. “I still have a lot of confidence in them,” the manager said. “You get the matchups you have to get and you have to get the outs you need to get.”

Lately, that has not just not been the case.

Greg Bird hits a two-run homer in the 4th inning to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead over the Twins.

The Yankees refused to part with Greg Bird before the trade deadline. We’re starting to understand why.

The rookie first baseman belted two home runs in his first three at-bats Wednesday, thrilling the Yankee Stadium crowd with the first two long balls of his career.

Bird, starting in place of the injured Mark Teixeira (bone bruise on right leg), hit a towering two-run shot into the second deck off Minnesota’s Ervin Santana in the fourth inning, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

After Nathan Eovaldi – who had a perfect game through 5.1 innings – gave up three runs in the sixth, Bird put the Yankees back on top with another two-run blast off Santana, depositing this one in the Yankees bullpen.

Bird, who entered the game 4-for-14 (.286) with one double and one RBI in his first four games, came out for a curtain call as the Stadium crowd remained on its feet.

Before the game, Joe Girardi praised Bird’s ability to handle the speed of the major-league game during his first week with the Yankees.

Greg Bird, the Yankees rookie first baseman, watches as his fourth inning blast leaves the yard.

“I think he’s got a slow clock; things don’t really speed up for him,” Girardi said. “You can see it in his at-bats. You can see it in his defense. And that’s not always the case with a young player. I think he’s really maturing. He’s shown a lot of maturity so far. It’s just, he’s got a slow clock, and that’s what you want from players.”

Girardi even went as far as to compare Bird’s demeanor with a two-time AL MVP.

“When I think about some of the young kids that I managed, a lot of it had to do with in Florida,” Girardi said. “This is a big comparison, and I’m not saying this is what my expectation (would be), but Miguel Cabrera had a slow clock and really had an understanding of what he wanted to do. And I think Greg Bird has an understanding of who he is and what he wants to do.”
