Sunday’s All-Star Game is all about Kobe Bryant as the league honors the Lakers guard before the game and he exits to fans chanting his name.

TORONTO – LeBron James slapped the floor and launched into his defensive posture, just as Kobe Bryant dribbled into an isolation against his fellow future Hall of Famer. The crowd was buzzing.

For a moment in the second quarter, there was the potential for the type of show that this night was supposed to be about.

Instead, sadly, it became an indictment on the state of an old man’s game. Bryant failed to get separation and launched up a brick anyway, then couldn’t recover quick enough to stop a transition alley-oop from James to Andre Drummond on the other end.

Bryant’s final All-Star Game Sunday night started with two tribute videos, a speech from Magic Johnson and a chant of “Kobe” from inside Air Canada Centre. It ended with 10 points in 26 minutes, an air-balled hook shot and a predictable failure to keep up with an All-Star pace. The only player who looked slower was Carmelo Anthony, who took it easy on his balky left knee and finished with 13 points in 23 minutes.

Bryant’s scoring output represented just five percent of the points for the West, which won, 196-173, shattering the record for most points scored in an All-Star Game (previously 163 done twice, most recently last year in New York). Defense was optional in Toronto as the West launched 80 3-pointers.

Bryant finishes with 10 points in his final All-Star Game.

Russell Westbrook, who led the West with 31 points, became the first player to win back-to-back MVPs since Bob Pettit in 1958.

To Bryant’s credit, he didn’t try to force an imprint on the game like Michael Jordan in 2003. The 37-year-old played a lot more than the 10 minutes he allotted himself before the game, but took only 11 shots while dishing out seven assists. He also seemed to enjoy the experience, the adulation and everything that came with it.

It was his night, his weekend, even if his game has seen better days. Bryant finished his All-Star career with 18 straight appearances and four MVPs.

Russell Westbrook wins the All-Star Game MVP for the second consecutive year.

“This is pretty cool,” Bryant said, scanning a large group of reporters earlier on the weekend. “I mean, I’m looking around the room and seeing guys that I’m playing with that are tearing the league up that were like 4 my first All-Star Game. How many players can say they played 20 years and actually have seen the game through three, four generations, you know what I mean? It’s not sad at all.”

If there was any doubt about who owned this All-Star Game, one would only have to experience a media availability. The players arrive all at once and are brought to different tables, with typically seven or eight reporters asking questions. James and Stephen Curry had more. Kawhi Leonard and Paul Millsap had less.

Paul George scores a game-high 41 points, falling one point shy of Wilt Chamberlain’s All-Star record.

“In addition to being a great player, he’s punched way above his weight in terms of the impact he’s had on the global expansion of the NBA,” commissioner Adam Silver said.

There’s a solid argument that Bryant was the least qualified “All-Star” on either roster as a high-volume shooter who has missed over 65% of his attempts this season on a terrible Lakers team. Yet he was the leading vote-getter by a substantial margin. Jordan wasn’t even voted in as a starter in his final All-Star Game in 2003. Tim Duncan, who is arguably the greatest power forward of all time, finished behind Enes Kanter in this year’s voting.

Shaquille O’Neal’s career ended unceremoniously in Boston.

But Bryant became something different along the way: He is the league’s greatest global icon, and much of that is because of a god-like status in China. It was fitting that his final All-Star Game was the first outside of American soil.

The stardom outlasted Bryant’s body. “When you’re young, you never think you’re going to get old,” he said. “You never think you’re going to be hurt, that your body’s going to give out. Time has a funny way of doing that. It humbles you, brings you down to Earth. Gravity.”

Number one WBO Welterweight Contender, Sadam “World Kid” Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) will face former world champion and number four WBO Welterweight Contender, Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) in a 12-round co-main event for the vacant WBO Welterweight World Championship. The DC Armory Box Office will be open on fight night only from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET.
Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Roach Jr. has been active fighter since his professional debut in 2014. In 2015, Lamont Jr. nearly doubled his professional experience with four victories against Herbert “Sensational” Quartey, Jose Miguel Castro, Christian Santibanez, and Jose “Flash” Bustos.  The 20-year-old super featherweight prospect is a fighter to watch in 2016.
A swift and ferocious striker, the undefeated Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis has repeatedly showcased his skills to audiences, most recently with a fourth-round technical knockout victory in Puerto Rico over Victor “Pambele” Gonzalez in March 2015 to claim the vacant WBA Fedecentro and the WBC Interim Latin Welterweight titles. Ellis won his three previous fights via technical knockout, defeating Joseph De los Santos and Joananthony Vazquez in Puerto Rico and Jose Martinez in the Dominican Republic. Later in 2015, Ellis played a key part in the training camp of Golden Boy Promotions fighter and now WBC, RING Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez. The 22-year-old Ellis trained with Canelo Alvarez as a sparring partner in preparation for Alvarez’s November 21 super fight against Miguel Cotto.
A professional since 2013, D’Mitrius “Big Meech” Ballard has quickly risen the ranks in the light heavyweight division. 2015 was a pivotal year for Maryland’s super middleweight for “Big Meech” as he passed every test with flying colors, showing that he could box as well as bang in decision victories over Josue “Chiquilin” Ovando, Juan Carlos “Chiflado” Rojas and Fabiano “Pit Bull” Pena in 2015.
Kevin “K-Smoove” Rivers, Jr. of Cheverly, Maryland is eager to get back in the ring after his first career loss. The fighter has been steadily moving up the ranks accumulating wins over other stand-out prospects, Xavier Montelongo and Karl Garcia in 2014.  In early 2015, the 25-year-old had impressive technical knockout victories over Stephon McIntyre and Luis “Lichito” Ruiz Lizarraga Jr. Now “K-Smoove” will be looking for victory in his fight of 2016.
After winning the first nine fights of his professional career on the east coast, Brooklyn’s Zachary “Zungry” Ochoa took his show on the road in 2015 and he continued to show off the skills that have made him a top prospect as he picked up four wins, including a big victory in Puerto Rico and  Los Angeles over Moises Rios, David Rodela and Alejandro “Soma” Rodriguez. Now the 23-year-old will look to continue the winning streak when he returns to the east coast for his first fight of 2016.
A professional since 2013, standout lightweight Damon Allen, has had victories over tough opposition in Hector Marengo, Tony “Sugar Boy” Walker and Travis “El Animal” Thompson. The 23-year-old Philadelphian stepped through the ropes twice in 2015, stopping Luis “Yeye” Rodriguez in three rounds at home in Philly before making his Los Angeles debut in November with a decision victory over Oscar Santana.
Returning to the ring for the first time since November of 2013, Philadelphia light heavyweight Todd Unthank-May is eager to pick up where he left off and build on his impressive unbeaten record. A versatile competitor who can do it all in the ring, the 27-year-old is coming off an impressive second-round technical knockout victory over Kentrell Clairborne in his most recent bout two years ago.

John Tavares (c.) talks with Lightning’s Steven Stamkos before going out and winning the accuracy shooting contest for the East.

NASHVILLE – A Chewbacca mask and a Jaromir Jagr look-alike were the highlights of Saturday night’s NHL All-Star Skills competition, but Islanders captain John Tavares also represented New York well by winning the accuracy shooting contest for the East.

Bearded San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns donned a mask of the furry Star Wars character during the breakaway challenge, losing in a fan vote to Montreal Canadiens D-man P.K. Subban, who donned a wig and a Panthers jersey and had his teammate Jagr rolling with laughter.

Tavares lifted the East to a win in the accuracy shooting, though, by hitting four targets on just five shots in only 12.294 seconds – the fastest time among all the shooters.

“Sometimes you’ve been sitting around for a half an hour and then you get that first puck and you’re not able to raise it,” Tavares said of how now player went 4-for-4. “The first shot or two you almost have to get yourself into it, at least for me today I missed the first one then got them all after that.”

Sharks center Joe Pavelski and Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin also hit the four targets on five shots but not as quickly as the Isles’ captain.

Tavares is also the captain of the Metropolitan Division’s team in Sunday night’s 3-on-3 All-Star tournament. He received the “C” when Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin backed out of the weekend’s festivities last minute due to a lower-body injury.

With the help of Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh’s goal in the shootout, the Eastern Conference won the skills competition, allowing the Atlantic and Metropolitan Divisions to select playing first in Sunday night’s inevitably tiresome event.

“We’re gonna play the first game. We’ve gotta keep Jags fresh,” said with a laugh mocking Jagr’s age.

McDonagh, who brought his whole family along to enjoy the nice weather and weekend festivities, credited his quick wrist shot past Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson to one of his most skilled Rangers teammates.

“I’ve kind of been picking it up in practice from Zuccarello over the years,” McDonagh said.

Carmelo Anthony closer to securing a starting spot in All-Star Game.

Carmelo Anthony got a boost in his bid to be an All-Star starter for the eighth consecutive time, jumping ahead of Andre Drummond in the latest voting update released Thursday.

The top-3 Eastern Conference frontcourt players are given a starting spot for the Valentine’s Day game in Toronto, and Anthony had trailed LeBron James, Paul George and Drummond in the first two voting returns.

ISOLA: NETS NEED BIG NAME TO COMPETE WITH KNICKS

But Anthony — who was assisted in his mission by James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul — jumped from 5,622 votes behind Drummond to 7,029 ahead. The online voting concludes Monday and the starters will be revealed Thursday on TNT.

Anthony’s scoring numbers are down this season as he embraces more of a facilitator role, averaging fewer shot attempts than any season after his sophomore campaign in 2004-05, and the most assists since 2006-07. The Knicks (20-21) showed how important he is to their success in Wednesday’s loss to the lowly Nets, when Anthony sat out with a sprained ankle and Kristaps Porzingis couldn’t shoulder the necessary load.

MELO FIRES BACK AFTER BARKLEY CHALLENGES HIS LEADERSHIP

Anthony told the Daily News he hopes to return for Saturday’s game in Memphis, but he also acknowledged the pain hadn’t subsided.

“It is more difficult (without Anthony). He kind of creates a lot of situations for us. He gets the ball, he’s getting the defense to be tighter and we can get wide open shots,” said Porzingis, who missed 12 of his 17 shot attempts Wednesday as the Knicks (20-21) fell to 0-3 in games that Anthony has missed. “And this time you can see from the beginning Thaddeus Young was really into my jersey and didn’t want me to even receive the ball. I could tell the difference between when Melo is on the court and when I am by myself with Arron (Afflalo) or Derrick, but yeah, I got to be ready for that as well. Guys are going to try and do that now. Just be ready for it and be ready to step up and be aggressive.”

Anthony, 31, is averaging 21.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists on 44 percent shooting. Earlier this month, Anthony and his powerful player clique with James, Wade and Paul all voted for each other on Twitter, which reached their millions of followers and might’ve pushed the Knicks forward over the hump.

“That’s what friends are for,” Anthony said at the time.

Porzingis also rose in the polls, jumping from ninth among Eastern Conference frontcourt players to seventh ahead of Kevin Love and Hassan Whiteside.

Kobe Bryant (1,533,423), Stephen Curry (1,206,467) and James (830,345) lead all vote-getters.

PHILADELPHIA – Well, someone had to win.

After 16 weeks of putrid, borderline-unwatchable NFC East football, a division champion has been crowned.

With a 38-24 victory over the Eagles Saturday night at Lincoln Financial Field, Washington claimed the NFC East title and ended the Giants’ chances of a playoff appearance. Big Blue’s game Sunday night at the Vikings is now meaningless in terms of postseason implications.

The question now is whether Tom Coughlin keeps his job. The coach has failed to lead the Giants to the playoffs in each of the past four seasons.

In typical NFC East fashion Saturday night, the gaffes were plentiful. Perhaps none was more incomprehensible than Kirk Cousin’s knee to end the first half.

Coming out of a timeout, the clock was stopped with six seconds to play in the second quarter. Washington had the ball inside the Eagles’ 20-yard line. But in a complete lapse of judgment, Cousins dropped to one knee, and the final seconds ticked off the clock.

DeSean Jackson silences the Philly crowd as the former Eagle is heading to the playoffs with Washington.

Still, Washington overcame the blunder to pull out the victory, largely because the Eagles made more mistakes. The nail in the coffin came with 3:15 left in the third quarter, when running back DeMarco Murray dropped a toss in the backfield. Washington defensive back DeAngelo Hall returned the fumble for a touchdown.

Giants fans received a jolt of false hope on the game’s opening possession when the Eagles drove 80 yards on six plays for a go-ahead touchdown. Sam Bradford went 4 of 4 passing for 50 yards on the drive, which Ryan Mathews capped off with one-yard touchdown.

Spirits were high in New York. Big Blue offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, who’s out for the season with a fractured leg, tweeted, “Well that’s a good start. Fly something fly,” jokingly alluding to Philly’s “Fly, Eagles Fly” fight song.

But as the Eagles’ errors mounted, the optimism dissipated. Tight end Jordan Reed caught two touchdown passes later in the first quarter to give Washington a 13-7 lead. On the first score, a 22-yard strike from Cousins, the Philly linebackers bit on a play-action fake and let Reed sprint open down the seam. Reed finished with nine catches for 129 yards.

Later in the half, Bradford overthrew tight end Zach Ertz, who was streaking uncovered down the sideline for what would have been a sure touchdown.

Earlier in the drive, the Eagles committed penalties on three consecutive plays – an illegal substitution, an illegal formation and a false start. And on their ensuing possession, wide receiver Nelson Agholor let a touchdown pass slip through his hands, forcing the Eagles to settle for a field goal.

Ertz then fumbled on the first play of the next drive.

As if Giants fans watching their own team lay eggs in big games wasn’t enough.

Washington entered halftime with a 16-10 lead, which would have been larger if not for Cousins’ brain fart. The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter before Murray’s fumble. Washington then added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Cousins found Pierre Garcon.

Cousins finished with 365 yards passing and four touchdowns.

Eli Manning and the Giants are still alive at 6-7.

The Giants are tied for first place in the NFC East with three games to go, which is theoretically a good place to be – unless the division actually ends in a tie.

If that happens, the Giants’ situation is far from grim, but it’s complicated and they’ll need help to survive the tie-breaker gauntlet.

They’ll also almost certainly need to win their final game against the Eagles, too.

GIANTS ACTUALLY RUN OUT CLOCK, BEAT DOLPHINS

Assuming they do, they appear to fare ever-so-slightly better against Philadelphia than against Washington in tie-breaker scenarios (though it really depends on how you look at it).

And their prospects in a three-way tie don’t look good at all.

Of course, tie-breakers can change over the final three weeks and nothing is clinched just yet. But here are the Giants’ tie-breaker situations regardless, for potential ties atop the division with Philadelphia, Washington or both (Oh, and no, the Cowboys are not eliminated. But for these scenarios, and for the sake of sanity, let’s assume they’re out … I’m also not doing the slim wild-card scenarios. The division mess took long enough):

Giants vs. Philadelphia tie-breakers

1. Head-to-head – The Eagles lead the season series 1-0, with the potential to clinch this tie-breaker when they visit the Meadowlands on Jan. 3.

2. Division record – The Eagles are 2-2 and the Giants are 2-3. They obviously play each other in the finale. One week earlier, the Eagles play at home against Washington.

3. Common games – Both teams are 5-6 in common games with one more game remaining. For the Eagles, that game is against Washington. For the Giants, that game is against the undefeated Carolina Panthers.

4. Conference record – The Giants are 4-5 and the Eagles are 3-6 and both have three NFC games remaining. (If you feel like doing the math, the next tie-breakers in order are strength of victory, strength of schedule, best combined ranking among NFC teams in points scored and points allowed, best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed, net points in common games, net points in all games, net touchdowns in all games … and if none of that works, they flip a coin).

Giants vs. Washington tie-breakers

1. Head-to-head – They split the season series, 1-1, so this won’t apply.

2. Division record – Washington is 2-2 with games remaining at Philadelphia and at Dallas. The Giants are 2-3 with a home game left vs. Philly.

3. Common games -Washington is 3-6 with three common games remaining (at Philadelphia, at Dallas, vs. Buffalo). The Giants are 4-6 with two common games left (vs. Carolina, vs. Philly).

4. Conference record – Washington has the decided advantage here with a 6-4 record and two conference games left (at Philly, at Dallas). The Giants are 4-5 with three conference games to go.

The Giants are chasing Washington too.Rob Carr/Getty Images

The Giants are chasing Washington too.

Three-way tie with the Giants, Washington and Philadelphia (If two teams remain tied after one team is eliminated at any stage of this tie-breaker scenario, those two teams start over with Step 1 of the two-team tie-breaker process).

1. Head-to-Head-to-Head – Washington is 2-1 (at Philly remaining), Philadelphia is 1-1 (vs. Washington, at Giants), and the Giants are 1-2 (vs. Philadelphia).

2. Division record – Washington and Philadelphia are 2-2 with two games left. The Giants are 2-3 with one game left.

3. Common games – Philadelphia is 5-5 with no common games (among all three teams) remaining, putting them in good position to win this tie-breaker. The Giants are 3-5 and Washington is 2-6. They both have two common games to go. Washington would be eliminated at this stage (since the best they could finish is 4-6), while the best the Giants could do is force a tie that would send them back to the two-team tie-breaker with Philadelphia

What, me worry? At 5-7 Eli Manning and the Giants have the best record in the NFC East, believe it or not! But so do the Eagles and Washington. And the Cowboys are just one game behind!

Does anybody even want to win the NFC East? Oh my, it’s just so bad.

“It’s the mud-wrestling division,” former Giants linebacker Carl Banks said Tuesday. “This is your NFC East. Nobody wants to get out.”

The NFC East is as competitive as ever, but the best division in the Super Bowl era is now an embarrassment.

The good: It’s the only division with a three-way tie for first place and with all four teams within one game of first. The bad: It’s the only division that doesn’t have one team playing .500.

If you’ve been away for the last 30 years, you would think there’s no way this is same place that had the four best coaches to ever coach in one division: Hall of Famers Tom Landry, Bill Parcells and Joe Gibbs, plus the fourth coach, Buddy Ryan, who no doubt feels he should be in Canton. When Landry faltered, Jimmy Johnson took over.

It was LT vs. Joe Jacoby and Phil Simms trying to escape Reggie White and Darrell Green covering Mike Quick and Keith Byars putting a huge hit on his best friend Pepper Johnson.

DeSean Jackson and Washington miss a huge opportunity Monday.

The NFC East has more Super Bowl appearances (20) and championships (12) than any division. In the 10 seasons from 1986-95, the NFC East won seven Super Bowls. The 49ers won the other three.

Now look at the NFC East’s standings following 12 games of the 2015 season:

Washington 5-7

Eagles 5-7

Giants 5-7

Cowboys 4-8

The winner automatically gets an invitation to the Super Bowl tournament and this season it will surely be offered the No. 4 seed, which comes with a first-round home game, surely against a team with a better record. If the four teams really cared about the pride of the division and its forefathers who made it so great, the winner would turn down the invitation.

Unless one of the 5-7 teams wins out, this will be the first year since the NFC East was formed in 1970 that the winner is not over .500.

“These things are a bit cyclical,” Parcells said by phone Tuesday from Florida. “The best thing about the NFC East is it is all relative. There’s not a dominant team, quite obviously, so all of the teams still have a chance. Whichever teams plays the best from here on out will be division champion. As you saw with several teams in the past, how you get in the Super Bowl tournament doesn’t make a difference. Just play well for a couple of games, be ready to go and you’re in the Super Bowl.”

The NFC East has been so bad lately it is the only one of the eight divisions that hasn’t earned a wild-card spot since the Eagles made it in 2009. When the Giants got red-hot in the 2007 playoffs and beat the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, they had a 10-6 record in the regular season, tying for the worst record ever for a Super Bowl champion.

Four years later, the Giants beat the Patriots again in Super Bowl XLVI, but they did it with a 9-7 record, the worst ever for a Super Bowl champion.

That’s quite a step back from 1986, the most compelling season in the NFC East, when the Giants were tied with Washington at 11-2 going into rowdy RFK Stadium. The Giants won the game, won the division at 14-2 followed by Washington at 12-4 and the Giants beat them for a third time in the NFC title game.

It was 39 degrees on Jan. 11, 1987, but with wind gusts up to 25 mph it felt much colder and all the stuff flying around Giants Stadium gave the late afternoon game an eerie feel to it.

The Giants won, 17-0.

“From what I understand, they were so distraught they completely destroyed the locker room. They ripped sinks out of the wall,” Banks said.

A Washington fan can’t to watch the awful football being played in the division.

It was an era of blue-collar football at its finest — except for the high-tech Cowboys, first with Landry, and then with Johnson, who won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992-93. Barry Switzer won another with Johnson’s players in 1995.

But it was the Northeast Corridor games between New York, Philly and Washington that had the blood-and-guts battles.

“We couldn’t figure out Philly and Philly couldn’t figure out Washington. It was either us or Washington that would go to the Super Bowl based on who could beat Philadelphia,” Banks said. “You were literally drawing up battle plans, not just from a strategic aspect, but a physical aspect.”

Considering some of the dreadful losses by the NFC East this season, especially five gut-wrenching games the Giants have lost despite leading in the final two minutes — that bit of ineptitude ties an NFL record — it would not be surprising if plumbers were on speed dial this season fixing locker room bathrooms.

This is not the old NFC East. It’s the bad NFC East. “There was strong competition at the time, but there is strong competition now,” Parcells said. “I’m not looking down on it. It’s just the records aren’t as good.”

On the final Sunday of the season on Jan. 3, it’s Washington at the Cowboys and the Eagles at the Giants. Well, at least there should be some old-fashioned NFC East drama.

Dan Bailey celebrates his game-winning field goal as the Cowboys somehow find themselves in the thick of the NFC East race at 4-8.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Sure was ugly, devoid of any style points or many scoreboard points until the final 1 1/2 minutes.

Perhaps fittingly, a fumbled punt return by Washington’s DeSean Jackson deep in his own territory led to Dallas’ only touchdown.

Dez Bryant’s sideline pouting aside, the receiver and the Cowboys will gladly accept the victory, because it means they’re somehow still in the thick of the playoff chase in the woeful NFC East.

With a wild finish capping an otherwise dull game filled with turnovers, punts and penalties, the Cowboys edged Washington 19-16 on Dan Bailey’s 54-yard field goal with 9 seconds left Monday night.

After combining to score 18 points in the first 58 1/2 minutes, the teams combined for 17 in the last 1 1/2.

Dallas scored the game’s first TD with 74 seconds remaining to lead 16-9 after recovering Jackson’s miscue on an ill-advised return, Washington tied it on Jackson’s 28-yard TD catch, and then Bailey hit the go-ahead kick.

The last-place Cowboys (4-8) won for the first time this season without Tony Romo at quarterback, and made quite a jumble of their division.

Kirk Cousins and Washington fail to take advantage atop the NFC East.

They are only one game behind Washington, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, who are all 5-7.

With the score knotted at 9-9, Jackson — who hadn’t been used as a punt returner this season until last week — caught the kick at his 16, began running up the field and got past the 20, before reversing course and heading backward all the way to the 1.

As he again tried to move forward, Jackson was surrounded and the ball popped out, recovered by punter Chris Jones at the 15 with 86 seconds remaining.

Dallas needed only two plays to cash in, jumping in front on Darren McFadden’s 6-yard touchdown run.

A 41-yard kickoff return plus a 15-yard facemask penalty on J.J. Wilcox set Washington up at Dallas’ 43, and four plays later, Jackson hauled in a perfect pass from Cousins in the back corner of the end zone to pull even with 44 seconds to go.

That left enough time for Matt Cassel — previously 0-4 as a starter in place of the injured Romo this season — to take Dallas 20 yards in five plays for Bailey’s fourth field goal of the evening.

Blue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson, in the Dominican Republic for David Ortiz’s charity golf event, opens up about losing ace David Price to the division rival Red Sox.

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic – Two of the American League East’s big sluggers have witnessed how quickly a team’s fortunes can change from one year to the next.

Adam Jones’ Orioles claimed the division crown in 2014 but finished in third place this past season and out of the postseason, while Josh Donaldson’s Blue Jays finally made the playoffs after a more than two-decade drought, only to see the ace – David Price – who helped them get there defect to Boston as a free agent this past week.

“It’s been notoriously the best league in Major League baseball,” Donaldson, the league’s newly crowned 2015 MVP, said Friday at David Ortiz’s charity golf event. “It’s been like that for a long time.”

Donaldson is part of a demolition Jays’ offense, but the lefty Price was a big reason Toronto won the division and stormed into the postseason where they had not been since winning the World Series in 1993. Now Price is on the Red Sox, shifting the balance of power, at least on paper.

“He’s a great teammate and I’m gonna miss him,” Donaldson said of the new Boston $ 217-million man. “He’s a bonafide No. 1 starter, Cy Young Award winner. But at the same time, it’s a business. I’m not going to take it easy on him when he’s on the other side.”

Jones, meanwhile, experienced the thrill of a division crown in 2014, but this past season the club finished at .500. Orioles first baseman Chris Davis could leave via free agency and leave a gaping hole on offense, but Jones is not worried about his club’s chances in 2016, even if he said he has “a little bit of jealousy” for the big-pocket front offices in New York and Boston.

“It’s the beauty of this division – it continually gets better. You think that a team’s gonna just have a couple years of badness – nah,” said Jones. “You just adapt to it. You see the Yankees, over the years they’ve always gotten one of the top free agents. You just tip your cap and be like, ‘OK.’ At the end of the day you have to do it between the lines. I don’t really care what any other team does, we’re going to be competitive. It’s no going back to Walmart steak. We’re a Whole Foods type of organization. We want to win.”

Donaldson crushed 41 home runs and had 123 RBI this past season, while batting .297 en route to MVP honors, and was part of an offensive juggernaut that includes Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki. Donaldson said that despite Price leaving, “we have all of our position players coming back.” Still, to compete in the AL East beast, he said pitching is king.

“It’s just going to be pitching, that’s what it comes down to. If you want to win, you have to be able to pitch. In this era, it’s a pitching-dominant era,” said Donaldson. “(Price) is the type of pitcher that affects the team for three or four days because he’s gonna save your bullpen. He’s gonna go out there and eat up innings for the entire time. In the clubhouse, he’s a great player but even better person. He cares about winning.”

The Red Sox and new president Dave Dombrowski care about winning as well, especially after moving quickly to sign Price.

“I was surprised at the alacrity with which it came. I knew that there was a plan to deal with one of our holes,” said former Red Sox CEO and president Larry Lucchino. “I think the (Red Sox/Yankee) rivalry will get hot this year.”

The Sox and Yankees both have an abundance of outfielders, but even if there was ever an opening to try and pursue Jones, the Orioles’ Gold Glove center fielder said he is not sure he could handle the spotlight in those bigger markets.

“It’s not up to me. That’s up to the franchise. I’m sure the fan base would love it if I just rode out into the sunset in Baltimore on a nice Harley,” said Jones. “But at the end of the day I know I got three years left on my deal. But as you’ve seen this sport transform, you never know. Look at (Tulowitzki) – 10 years with one team and then up and traded. My wife would love New York. She went to law school there. But me personally, I don’t know if I can play in Boston and New York. When we fly into that city, as soon as we land it’s a disgust, in the competitive way. You want to beat these guys. I know how to adapt, but it would be different. To bring a championship to Baltimore would be probably the best thing I’ve ever done.”
