Davis Cup finalists Great Britain have been drawn against Japan in the first round of the 2016 competition.

Britain will host the tie between 4 and 6 March following a drawing of lots at the official draw in Chile.

Should Britain get through they will play either Serbia or Kazhakstan in the second round.

Britain were top seeds for the draw after being the highest ranked team to reach the final of this year’s event. They play Belgium in November.

Switzerland are also in the same half of the draw as Britain, raising the potential for meetings between Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Britain have never played Japan, whose highest-ranked player is world number six  Kei Nishikori.

Thirty-one year-old Go Soeda is their next best at 115.

Andy Murray is hoping to lead Britain to a first Davis Cup win since 1936

Belgium have confirmed that the 2015 Davis Cup final against Great Britain will be held indoors on clay at the 13,000-capacity Flanders Expo in Ghent.

Led by world number three Andy Murray, Britain reached their first Davis Cup final since 1978 by beating Australia in the semi-finals on Sunday.

But the decision to play the final on clay on 27-29 November could mean Murray misses the World Tour Finals.

The Scot, 28, said he would need time to prepare for a switch in surface.

The World Tour Finals – on a hard court – finish at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday, 22 November.

Murray said: “The O2 would obviously be a question mark for me if we were playing on the clay.

“If you reach the final and play on the Sunday you also need to take time off – you can’t just play five matches against the best players in the world and then not take any days off.”

But Chris Kermode, executive president of the ATP which governs men’s professional tennis, said Murray would be expected to play in London.

BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller

“Murray said quite clearly in a BBC interview after the semi-final win over Australia that he would like to devote the week before the Davis Cup final to practice on clay – to allow his back more time to adjust to the surface. He has come to the conclusion that he won’t be at his best for the final if he spends the preceding week contesting some potentially gruelling matches on the hard court of the World Tour Finals.

He would take a big financial hit, and could theoretically be banned from the ATP Tour, if he did miss the season finale, but has an excellent relationship with boss Chris Kermode. This one is likely to be played out behind closed doors.”

“The ATP World Tour Finals is a mandatory event on the ATP World Tour,” he said. “All players who qualify, unless injured, are required to compete in the event.”

Belgium are hosts for the final because of a rotation policy that sees teams alternate home advantage in fixtures against each other in the Davis Cup.

The last time Britain faced Belgium, in 2012, the match was held in Glasgow where Belgium took a 4-1 victory.

Britain, who lead the head-to-head between the two nations 7-4, are aiming to win a first Davis Cup since 1936, when a team led by Fred Perry beat Australia 3-2 on grass at Wimbledon.

Andy Murray is set to miss this year’s World Tour Finals if, as expected, Belgium decide to host the Davis Cup final against Great Britain on clay.

The Flanders Expo Arena in Ghent will stage the tie if the Davis Cup Committee gives its approval on Tuesday.

The Belgian Federation has two weeks to confirm its choice of surface, but has opted for clay in four of its last six home ties and may conclude it is the surface most likely to inconvenience Murray.

The World Tour Finals – on a hard court – finish at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday, 22 November, with the Davis Cup final played over three days from the following Friday.

“The O2 would obviously be a question mark for me if we were playing on the clay,” Murray told BBC Radio 5 live after sealing Britain’s place in the final.

“I would go and train and prepare on the clay to get ready for the final.

2014: Round robin

2013: Did not play

2012: Semi-finals

2011: Round robin

2010: Semi-finals

2009: Round robin

“You saw last year with Roger Federer that the matches at the O2 are extremely tough and physically demanding.

“If you reach the final and play on the Sunday you also need to take time off – you can’t just play five matches against the best players in the world and then not take any days off.”

Federer woke up with a bad back on the morning of last year’s final at the O2 and was unable to play Novak Djokovic.

Although Switzerland went on to win the Davis Cup the following week, Federer lost his opening match to France’s Gael Monfils in straight sets.

Murray’s back surgery in 2013 was successful, but he was managing a problem throughout Britain’s semi-final victory over Australia and needs extra time to make the transition to clay.

The Scot, who won three points in the 3-2 win over Australia in Glasgow, explained: “For me to play – if I was to reach the final – five in a row and then take a couple of days off, it would mean only playing for two days on the clay before the Davis Cup final starts and that wouldn’t be enough for me.

“I need more time on the clay to let my back get used to it.”

Belgium thrashed in sole final

Belgium have only played in the Davis Cup final on one previous occasion – in 1904, when they were beaten 5-0 by Great Britain.

If Murray does not play in the World Tour Finals, he will miss out on prize money ranging from £300,000 to £1.25m, 1,500 ATP ranking points and the chance to win the prestigious season-ending event for the first time.

The Flanders Expo Arena, meanwhile, which in the past has hosted Elton John, Prince and U2, as well as Belgian TV’s version of The Voice, will have a capacity of 13,000 fans for the final. Although the arena is vast, the height of the roof limits the size of the stands that can be built.

Tickets are expected to be cheaper than for last year’s final which was watched on the opening day in Lille by a world record crowd of more than 27,000 people.

However, it is unlikely there will be more than 1,300 made available to British fans with the Belgian Federation only obliged to distribute 10% to the away team and Belgium appearing in their first Davis Cup final for 111 years.

Kyle Edmund is fit to vie with James Ward and Dan Evans for a singles role in Great Britain’s Davis Cup semi-final against Australia in Glasgow.

The world number 100 suffered a fall in practice on Tuesday but a scan revealed no significant damage to his ankle and he could join Andy Murray in the team.

“Fortunately, it’s not serious,” said Britain captain Leon Smith.

“He did take a bit of a tumble on the court. He was able to hit today, pretty much pain free.”

Doubles players Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot complete the British squad, with the draw to be made on Thursday and final line-ups confirmed before play on Friday.

Australia are led by captain Wally Masur, with Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis the highest-ranked singles players and Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth likely to play doubles.

The best-of-five tie opens with two singles matches on Friday, followed by the two doubles matches on Saturday and the reverse singles on Sunday.

The winners will play either Argentina or Belgium in the final.

See how you can follow the tie against Australia across the BBC.

Smith faces singles dilemma

No decision has been made, publicly or apparently privately, over whether Edmund, Ward or Evans will take the second singles place behind Andy Murray at the Emirates Arena.

Edmund, 20, has never played a Davis Cup tie, but Ward – who won a dramatic five-set match against John Isner of the United States at the same venue in March – has lost his last 10 matches.

Evans, ranked 300, was brought into the squad following the concern over Edmund and the 25-year-old has not been ruled out of contention, after a strong run of results on the second-tier challenger tour.

“I’ll go with my gut instinct,” said Smith. “I’ve got some things in my own head to figure out and I’ll talk to the guys.”

Pressure is on everyone – Murray

Hewitt is talking up the pressure on Andy Murray as he plays his final Davis Cup campaign. The 34-year-old plans to retire after the Australian Open at the start of 2016.

Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton Hewitt won Wimbledon in 2002 and has won the Davis Cup twice – in 1999 and 2003.

“A lot of the pressure is obviously on Andy,” said the former world number one. “Whoever gets the opportunity to face him on day one really has nothing to lose.”

Murray, who took five days off on returning home following a fourth-round defeat by Kevin Anderson at the US Open, disagreed.

“I wouldn’t say it’s all on me,” said the Scot. “It’s obviously Lleyton’s last chance to win the Davis Cup – he’ll be feeling the pressure as well.

“We can point fingers at each other and say that there is pressure for certain individuals and none on others, but they’ll be feeling the pressure as well. We’ll see who handles it better over the weekend.”

Absent Kyrgios ‘a 10-year proposition’

Masur has his own selection issues after Nick Kyrgios, the second-highest ranked Australian, was left out of the squad by mutual agreement.

Kyrgios is absent after agreeing with Masur to take a break, following a summer in which he made global headlines for on-court comments made to Stan Wawrinka about the Swiss player’s girlfriend.

“Nick has had a really full year, in more ways than one so far,” said Masur.

“We felt that, mutually, this was the best fit for him and the best fit for the team. And, to be honest, we look at Nick as a 10-year proposition.”

Australia have won the Davis Cup on 28 occasions, but not since beating Spain in 2003.

Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund is having an ankle scan after suffering an injury during practice for the Davis Cup semi-final against Australia.

Edmund is vying for a spot in the team with James Ward as the second singles player, behind Andy Murray.

However, when asked about the situation by BBC Scotland, captain Leon Smith said: “It’s all fine.”

The semi-final meeting begins on Friday with two singles matches, followed by a doubles match on Saturday.

The reverse singles on Sunday complete the tie with Murray expected to play on all three days.

The winners in Glasgow will face either Argentina or Belgium in the final at the end of November.

Let’s admit it: between constant pitching changes and instant replay, sometimes baseball can make you sleepy.

On Wednesday night, Chris Davis woke one drowsy fan up with a mammoth walk-off home run in the 11th inning against the Rays.

Davis’ slam landed several rows up the left-center field bleachers at Camden Yards, where cameras caught one fan casually napping toward the top of the section.

The roar from the crowd appeared to wake the guy as he turned around to see what the commotion was about before the ball landed nearby.

Perhaps if the man was awake he’d be walking out of Camden Yards with a souvenir.

At least he can say he stayed for the whole game.

Britain’s number one Andy Murray has lost just twice in Davis Cup singles matches

Glasgow’s Emirates Arena has been confirmed as the stage for Great Britain’s Davis Cup semi-final with Australia from 18-20 September.

Britain beat the United States in Glasgow in March, with the venue capacity expanded to 8,200 seats.

Quarter-final success against France followed at Queen’s Club in July and another win would put Britain through to their first final since 1978.

Belgium meet Argentina in the other semi-final.

Andy Murray won both of his singles matches against USA and France and teamed up with brother Jamie for a doubles victory at Queen’s.

“It’s exciting for the team to be going back to Glasgow,” said Britain’s number one.

“It’s always special to play in front of a home crowd and we are fortunate to have played our last three ties at home.

“We had a unique atmosphere in Glasgow, the crowd was unbelievable. It’s going to be a huge week for our team and we’ll be doing everything we can to get GB through to the final.”

World number three Murray has an outstanding singles record in the Davis Cup, winning 21 of his 23 matches in GB colours.

Last week it was revealed that the Lawn Tennis Association had failed to persuade Florence and the Machine to change the date of their show at the Manchester Arena in their search for a semi-final venue.

The LTA also looked into holding the tie at the Hydro in Glasgow but found the roof would not be high enough.

Glasgow was the host city for wins over Luxembourg and Hungary in 2011, with a success against Slovakia and a loss against Belgium following in 2012.

The teams for the semi-final will be announced no later than 10 days before the start of the tie.

Great Britain are into the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time in 34 years

4 August 2015 Last updated at 21:06

The Lawn Tennis Association has failed to persuade Florence and the Machine to change the date of their show at the Manchester Arena so the venue could host Britain’s Davis Cup semi-final.

Glasgow’s Emirates Arena is now expected to stage Team GB’s meeting with Australia from 18-20 September.

The LTA also looked into holding the tie at the Hydro in Glasgow but found the roof would not be high enough.

Andy Murray helped Team GB beat France in the quarter-final at Queen’s Club.

The LTA’s chief executive Michael Downey has had “several conversations” with Florence’s agent, but was told her gig at Manchester Arena – which has a capacity of over 20,000 – on the Friday of Britain’s Davis Cup semi-final must go ahead as planned.

The LTA has been granted an extra five days to nominate a venue for the tie, with Glasgow now expected to be confirmed before next Wednesday’s deadline.

The Emirates staged Britain’s first-round victory over the United States, and a plan is in place to expand the capacity of the arena to 9,000 in time for the semi-final.

While the pie tasted tangy, the win was probably bittersweet. Oakland is still 11 games back of AL West-leading Anaheim and appear to be sellers as the trade deadline nears. The Mets are reportedly interested in utilityman Ben Zobrist while Scott Kazmir could be dealt to the Astros.

Britain celebrate victory over France in the Davis Cup

Great Britain last won the Davis Cup in 1936

Whisper it quietly, but Great Britain could just win the Davis Cup this year.

Belgium have accounted for holders Switzerland, and Argentina for Serbia. The strongest all-round team in the competition were France, until GB finished them off on a memorable weekend at the Queen’s Club.

Andy Murray is the only top-10 player who can feature in the semi-finals.

“With the position we’re in just now, we’d love to do it,” said Murray, as he looked forward to a third successive home tie against a fellow Grand Slam nation.

Britain will play Australia in the middle of September, with the winners to face either Belgium or Argentina in the final at the end of November.

A team, but with a very clear leader

Andy and Jamie Murray during the Davis Cup doubles

Andy Murray played on all three days of Britain’s Davis Cup tie against France

James Ward took the vital scalp of John Isner in the first-round tie with the US in March and Jamie Murray looked every inch a Wimbledon finalist when he partnered his brother in the doubles at Queen’s. They still have a big contribution to make, but know the biggest weight will be carried by Andy Murray.

The expectations, and the assumptions often made about the outcome of his matches, would suffocate many. If bad weather at a Grand Slam forced someone to play a five-set match three days in a row, his chances of winning the title would be immediately downgraded.

Yet that is what Murray achieved over the weekend: his brother may have shared the load in the doubles, but that encounter was sandwiched between matches against the 11th and 12th best players in the world.

Until the last few points of the second set, it looked as if Sunday’s match against Gilles Simon might prove a bridge too far. Tired of body and mind at the end of a frenetic spell of tennis, Murray was being outplayed by a Frenchman only too happy to construct gruelling rallies, which more often than not turned out in his favour.

And yet Murray still won the match – ultimately with plenty to spare – and left his captain in no doubt he could play another three matches in the semi-final if it was in the best interests of the team.

“I think Andy is one of the fittest athletes on the tour, perhaps even in world sport,” Leon Smith told BBC Sport.

“He got through it, against the highest level of opposition. Obviously it’s very tiring, but he got through it.”

The threat posed by Australia

Australia celebrate beating Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup

Australia came from 2-0 down to defeat Kazakhstan in their Davis Cup quarter-final

Australia boast two top-50 players in Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios. Both can be spectacular, but that is never guaranteed.

Sam Groth’s serve, Thanasi Kokkinakis’s raw talent and Lleyton Hewitt’s vast experience make all of those players potentially more dangerous than their rankings suggest, but Smith knows a place in the final is within his team’s capabilities.

“It’s a tough ask, but we’ve shown that we’ve beaten probably the strongest team in France,” he said.

“Because we’ve got Andy in our team, and a world-class doubles player in Jamie, and James Ward – who will have a really high-level summer tournament schedule because of where his ranking is at now – then we will be difficult to beat.”

Can a good cup run inspire the next generation?

It would be nice to think that a run to the final would inspire people to flood to their local tennis courts, and that as a result we will one day produce a greater volume of top-100 players. The two years that have elapsed since Murray’s Wimbledon victory suggest this is most probably wishful thinking, but this is another excellent opportunity for the Lawn Tennis Association.

Instead of having just a few weeks in June and July, the governing body now has a third attractive home tie of the year to showcase the sport. Tennis feels like a year-round sport in the UK in 2015, with the chance that coverage could extend until the last week in November. A final between Britain and Argentina would also be staged in the UK.

How do you find the right venue in less than nine weeks?

Florence and the Machine performing at Glastonbury 2015

Florence and the Machine are already due to perform at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro arena on 14 September – when a potential Davis Cup semi-final venue would need to be ready for team practice

But where will these ties take place? It would be possible to play a mid-September semi-final outdoors, but a roof would be preferable, and the All England Club has suggested it would be impractical for the tie to be staged at Wimbledon.

And so an indoor hard court seems most likely, and perhaps more logical, in the aftermath of the US hard-court season. Finding a suitable and available venue may be the tricky part.

Any indoor venue must be ready for team practice from the Monday before the tie. Time is also required to build the court and its infrastructure, which means a 10-day window needs to be found.

Florence and the Machine have already secured Glasgow’s SSE Hydro; Michael McIntyre has booked Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena and the Dalai Lama is on the bill at London’s O2 Arena.

I’m not aware that the Dalai Lama is a tennis fan, but there may be flexibility in the schedules of some suitable venues around the UK.

And after the success of the tie against the US at the Emirates Arena, and this weekend’s clash at the Queen’s Club, there may also be a few owners who think they would like to be associated with what could turn out to be a memorable year for British tennis.
