NFL roundup: Reggie Wayne reportedly asks Pats for release
- Updated: September 5, 2015

Ex-Colts WR Reggie Wayne reportedly set to retire just a week and a half after signing with Pats.
After spending just a week-and-a-half in New England, Reggie Wayne reportedly wanted out.
The longtime Colts wide receiver was among the Patriots’ cuts on Saturday, when NFL teams needed to reduce their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. EST. According to ESPN, Wayne, who signed with the Patriots on Aug. 25, asked to be released. ESPN also reported that it is expected Wayne will opt to retire.
The Colts and Patriots have been rivals throughout the careers of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, who have had epic encounters both in the regular season and playoffs. After Wayne signed with the Patriots, the Indianapolis Star ran a headline over a huge photo of Wayne on the cover of its sports section which said “Patriot or Traitor?” The headline was widely criticized, with Colts linebacker Robert Mathis calling the paper out on Twitter.
New England also released running back Jonas Gray, who last season in a game at Indianapolis had 37 carries for 201 yards and four touchdowns.
Another notable cut by one of the Jets’ division rivals was the Bills releasing quarterback Matt Cassel. The Bills traded for Cassel during the offseason and was considered the favorite to be their starter, but Rex Ryan ultimately settled on Tyrod Taylor. Buffalo saves $ 4.15 million cutting Cassel.
The Titans cut former Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. He failed to get his career back on track last season with the Colts and couldn’t hang on in Tennessee.
