PORT ST. LUCIE – At least the Cardinals minor league team will have something to tell their kids.

Matt Harvey, switched from a Grapefruit League game in Viera to a minor league game at the Mets spring training complex because of the threat of rain, gave up six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings against the minor league squad Saturday.

The Mets’ Opening Day starter was the victim of some minor league defense with routine balls getting past the shortstop and third baseman and the shortstop throwing wide on what would have been a routine play at first.

Still, the Cardinals minor leaguers made solid contact on Harvey’s fastball, connecting for three triples. The right-hander, who got the nod for the April 3 Opener in Kansas City, threw 71 pitches. With two more spring training starts remaining, the main concern for him is to build up his shoulder strength and work his way up to 95 to 100 pitches per outing.

The switch in Harvey’s plans was because there was rain in the forecast for Viera. The rain was predicted to be heavy at 2 p.m., according to Weather.com.

But the Mets were not very upset that they were not pitching one of their big four starters against the Nationals on Saturday, a division rival the Mets will face 19 times this season. So far this spring the Mets have started only Steven Matz as one of their young guns against the Nationals. They have sent Rafael Montero, Bartolo Colon and Logan Verrett to the mound this spring against the Nationals, avoiding throwing the front end of their rotation.

The Mets and Nationals will face off two more times this spring.
