On Martin Luther King’s birthday, Matt Barnes quotes the iconic civil rights leader to defend his one-sided public feud with Knicks coach Derek Fisher.

Matt Barnes has a dream that one day he can beat up and verbally rip Derek Fisher without punishment.

Juxtaposing a picture of Martin Luther King and a quote from the Civil Rights leader about speaking out “about things that matter,” Barnes posted a message on Instagram that clearly was a reaction to getting fined $ 35,000 by the NBA on Sunday for defending his violence on the Knicks coach.

“In life staying true to yourself comes with hardships and consequences,” Barnes wrote. “You have to be willing to except WHATEVER comes with it! Sometime standing alone isn’t the popular choice, BUT ITS THE RIGHT CHOICE #freedofspeech #NeverBeAfriadToSpeakYourMind #TheirScaredOfREAL #MLKDAY.”

The quote from King used by Barnes was: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” What clearly matters to Barnes is honoring the unwritten friend — or bro — code, which the Grizzlies forward feels was violated by his former teammate Fisher.

Barnes has been fined roughly $ 100,000 by the NBA since fighting Fisher in October at the home of his estranged wife, Gloria Govan,. The latest punishment was for defending his actions in an interview Saturday, saying, “Every man looks at the situation and knows what’s right and wrong. Violence is never the answer, but sometimes it is.”

“Matt Barnes’ comments condoning violence do not reflect who we are as a league or the character of our players,” said NBA Executive Vice President Kiki VanDeWeghe. “His words are unacceptable and entirely inconsistent with the core principles of this game and the NBA.”
