Kevin Spacey and Panthers have formed bizarre alliance

Even for the Internet, this one doesn’t make any sense.

I know we say that a lot, but it’s REALLY true this time: Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey and the NHL’s Florida Panthers have struck up a relationship.

The Panthers have a post-game tradition – similar to that of the Rangers and the Broadway Hat – of handing out a sweatshirt with Kevin Spacey’s face on it. The head, however, is floating in outer space. The hashtag being used by the Panthers team Twitter account? You guessed it: #SpaceyInSpace.

Story goes the team met Spacey at a hotel and went on a winning streak. So that explains the Spacey angle. Why #SpaceyInSpace became a thing, though is anyone’s guess.

For Saturday’s game against the Red Wings, Spacey masks were given out – and when the actor popped out from behind one of the heads on sticks on the Jumbotron, the crowd gave him a huge ovation.

Kevin Spacey and the Florida Panthers: Together at last.

Spacey had hinted he was going to attend a game by tweeting a video of himself packing a suitcase, that ended with a Panthers jersey with his name and the number “1738” on the back. The “1738” is a reference to Fetty Wap and the Remy Boyz, whose song “679” plays at the end of Spacey’s video.

The Panthers do play Fetty Wap at the end of each win – but they play “Trap Queen” – the rapper’s first single, not “679.”

So maybe there is some other connection?

Spacey is from South Orange, N.J., so that can’t be it. You’d have figured the Devils would be his hockey team. Fetty Wap and the Remy Boyz are from Paterson, N.J., so ditto for them about the Devils. The hit song “679” is said to refer to Fetty Wap’s birthday of June 7, 1990 despite some places listing the rapper’s birthday as June 7, 1991. Either way, the song title is still missing a digit.

This is all very strange – though not as strange as Florida’s Jaromir Jagr being top 30 in the NHL in points at age 44.

As we said, none of this makes any sense.

So, we outsiders give up.
