Kansas St. to pay fine for offensive marching band formation
- Updated: September 8, 2015
Kansas State will pay the price for inadvertently performing a not-safe-for-work halftime show, after its marching band appeared to form male genitalia — along with its rival’s mascot — during Saturday’s home opener against South Dakota.
The band quickly issued an apology, saying they were meant to resemble Kansas University’s Jayhawk fighting a Starship Enterprise — but many shocked viewers didn’t get the memo.
“If you weren’t watching the #KState band at halftime you missed a borderline pornographic formation. So sorry I didn’t get a pic,” tweeted one person watching the Wildcats’ 34-0 win.

On Tuesday, Kansas State agreed to sanctions with the Big 12 Conference: a fine and a single-game suspension for the director of bands.
“At Saturday’s home football opener Kansas State University fell short of its obligation to conduct itself in a consistent manner with the principles of sportsmanship,” said university president Kirk Schulz. “Good sportsmanship is part of the Wildcat way; we do not want to do anything that takes away from the tremendous efforts of our student athletes and the award-winning Pride of Wildcard Land marching band.”
Kansas State will pay a $ 5,000 fine to the Big 12 Conference for violation of the league’s sportsmanship policy. Director of bands Frank Tracz will be suspended Nov. 28, during the game against Kansas.

The Kansas State marching band performs an offensive halftime show Saturday.
There now must be “prior approval for the content of all band halftime shows” by the school’s Office of Student Life and athletic department, as well.
Kansas State had been notified by the Big 12 Conference of potential violations of its sportsmanship and ethical conduct policies following the game, prompting the internal sanctions.
