Jets' Sheldon Richardson spared jail for police chase case

Sheldon Richardson avoided prison for the resisting arrest charge he received last July after police clocked him driving at 143 miles per hour in a high-speed road race in Missouri.

The Jets defensive lineman received two years bench probation and 100 hours of community service for the resisting arrest charge on a plea deal Tuesday, according to Richardson’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum. The resisting arrest charge will be wiped from Richardson’s record upon completion of the probation and community service. Bench probation means he will not have to report to a probation officer.

Richardson also received just over $ 1,000 in fines from four traffic violations.

“We were extremely pleased with the result,” Rosenblum said. “Sheldon obviously understands that he made a very poor choice. It’s not going to happen again. He’s looking forward to moving on. He’s even gotten ridden of that particular vehicle.”

Richardson is not out of the woods yet, however. The NFL has yet to hand down discipline to the defensive lineman for the incident, so it is still unclear if he’ll receive a suspension from the league and, if so, for how long.

The defensive lineman had already been suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season for failing a drug test for marijuana when he received charges from what police said was a high-speed road race on July 14, 2015. Cops said Richardson, driving a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur W12, was going up to 143 miles per hour and refused to pull over. Eventually police caught up to him, but only after the defensive lineman turned off his lights and pulled into a driveway.

Two adult men and a 12-year old boy, who turned out to be a relative of Richardson’s, were also in the car. Police said there was an odor of marijuana in the car but did Richardson did not receive any drug charges. A legally registered handgun was also in the car.

The incident resulted in Richardson receiving a Class A misdemeanor charge, which could have yielded up to one year in jail time, in addition to multiple traffic violations. He initially pled not guilty to all charges.
