Jets cut a pair of backup QBs, place Ridley on the PUP list

The Jets auditioned Matt Flynn and John Johnson for their temporarily open backup quarterback job, and then elected to cut them both. Johnson was cut Saturday, according to a source, and Flynn tweeted that he was let go by the Jets.

By cutting both Flynn and Johnson, the Jets leave themselves with just two healthy quarterbacks: Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty.

At this point, Gang Green has a few different options for what they could do at the quarterback position. One option is to just stick with what they have, making Petty the backup quarterback to start the season. This could be an increasingly attractive option given that there is a growing sense that Geno Smith might be healthy sooner than expected.

Alternatively, the Jets could sign another veteran quarterback that becomes available during the cut-down. Or, Gang Green could wait to sign a veteran after Week 1 so their salary won’t be guaranteed.

Though Flynn is out of a job at the moment, he seemed to be taking it in stride: the journeyman QB tweeted a picture of a bloody mary Saturday morning.

RIDLEY HITS PUP LIST

Stevan Ridley will start the 2015 season on the PUP list, the Daily News first reported.

The former Patriots running back will miss at least the first six games of the season, but will not count against the Jets’ 53-man roster limit while on the regular season PUP list.

It isn’t much of a surprise that Ridley won’t be active to start the year. The running back tore his ACL last October while playing for New England, and has yet to practice yet with Gang Green.

The Jets don’t need to rush Ridley back as they have plenty of depth at running back with Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy.
