Golden Horn is set to face nine rivals as he attempts to create his own piece of racing history in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The John Gosden-trained colt is bidding to become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to have won the Derby, Eclipse and King George in the same season.

He is the only three-year-old in the line-up and will be joined by two Gosden-trained stablemates in Eagle Top and Romsdal.

Eagle Top was strongly fancied for the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot but become embroiled in a barging match with Postponed, whom he meets again here.

Richard Hughes, who will retire from riding the following week after the end of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, said on Friday: “I’m absolutely delighted to have got the ride. He’s second favourite and looks to be the danger to Golden Horn.

“He was really impressive at Ascot last year where he won the King Edward VII Stakes and ran a good race at Royal Ascot on his latest start when he finished behind Snow Sky.

“He’s a maturing horse and seems to be improving so I’m hoping he puts in a good show on Saturday.”

Romsdal has not been seen since finishing fourth in the Yorkshire Cup behind Snow Sky, who was supplemented for a crack at the mid-summer highlight after winning the Hardwicke.

Snow Sky is owned by Khalid Abdullah, who will also be represented by the Andre Fabre-trained Flintshire.

David Simcock’s The Corsican, a fast-finishing fourth to Free Eagle in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, looks sure to be suited by the step back up in trip, while stable companion Madame Chiang, a winner on Champions Day last season, tackles the colts.

Clever Cookie has his first run in a Group One for Peter Niven, while Italian challenger Dylan Mouth, eighth in the Hardwicke last summer, completes the field.

Dylan Mouth’s jockey Fabio Branca said: “I was delighted with how the horse exercised in his final piece of work on Tuesday. He seems to be at the top of his game.

“I believe he will run much better on Saturday than when he did at Ascot last year [King Edward VII Stakes] when he finished behind Eagle Top and Snow Sky.

“He is now much more mature and has learnt to settle which has helped him develop. I am really looking forward to the weekend and I’m sure it will be a great race.”

Golden Horn heads the updated betting at 1/2 with Sky Bet, ahead of Eagle Top at 13/2.
