Giants co-owner Steve Tisch hypes up free-agent signings
- Updated: March 21, 2016
They just got rid of their two-time Super Bowl champion head coach (who still hangs around East Rutherford, by the way), they haven’t sniffed the playoffs in four years, and even after a massive free agent spending spree, their roster still has holes.
But none of that stopped Steve Tisch from hyping this next era of Giants football on Monday at the NFL owners meetings in Boca Raton, Fla. In fact, Tisch called this upcoming season, with all its tumult and uncertainty, one of the most “exciting” times in a quarter-century.
“I think this is the most significant transition, and now one of the most exciting times in the last 25 years that I can remember,” the Giants co-owner said.
Never mind the two Super Bowl runs under Tom Coughlin, who was fired in January. On Monday, Tisch was all in on GM Jerry Reese’s free-agent makeover, which saw the club hand more than $ 150 million in contract money to three players – Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison and Janoris Jenkins.
It’s a calculated risk that chains the future of a moribund defense to a trio of free agents. But one day after the always budget-conscious John Mara said he approved of the big spend, Tisch agreed.
Forget carefully building through the draft. An instant free-agent turnaround was necessary, even if it meant overspending, Tisch said.
“It’s the cost of doing business in the NFL,” Tisch said. “No one’s buying wholesale. The retail prices are high and there’s a reason – it’s a market, it’s supply and demand. Like any other market, there’s a seller and there’s a buyer, and the price is determined by who’s going to pay for what.”
And the Giants needed fixing.
“Clearly the last couple of seasons, we saw where we need to be better,” he said. “Part of the way to get better is to get better players . . . so the moves that Jerry made, I’m thrilled about. I couldn’t be happier.
“I’m not arguing about the amount of money we spent and the cost of what our players are costing us. I just hope we’ve got a group of guys that are going to play their hearts out and really be contributors and proud to be playing for the New York Giants.”
