Flyers’ Neuvirth makes incredible sprawling save in Wild win
- Updated: February 26, 2016
If this wasn’t the save of the year in the NHL thus far, it’s certainly among the leading candidates.
Flyers goaltender Michal Neuvirth’s spectacular, stretched-out stick somehow kept Charlie Coyle’s shot from crossing the goal line with three seconds left Thursday night against the Wild, preserving a 3-2 victory.

Michal Neuvirth stuns the Wild with the last of his 24 saves Thursday.
The six Wild skaters celebrated thinking they had just tied the game with moments to spare and its goalie on the bench as Coyle’s shot from the bottom of the left circle made its way toward the netting. Neuvirth, however, sprawled from the top of his crease, reached his stick out and managed to keep the puck out by a hair, the clock ultimately stopping with 1.6 seconds left.
The call was upheld upon review as no camera angle showed the entire puck crossing the line.

Charlie Coyle and his Wild teammates celebrated before the referee confirmed Neuvirth’s incredible save.
Neuvirth’s stunning save allowed the Flyers to hold on for a huge win in a game between two teams in different conferences both desperate for points to stay in the thick of the Wild Card race. The win pushed the Flyers up to 65 points, three points behind the Penguins for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Wild remained at 64 points and are four points behind the Avalanche for the final spot in the West.
Philadelphia’s backup goalie, Neuvirth is having one of the best seasons of his career. He’s 14-7-4 in 27 games (24 starts) with career-bests in goals against average (2.20) and save percentage (.927.)
