]]>Long before he became the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer, won the first of his five rings and switched numbers from 8 to 24, Kobe Bryant was a teenager.
In fact, he was probably the only teenager on the court in a 1997 episode of “Hang Time,” the delightfully corny teen sitcom that NBC aired on Saturday mornings from 1995-2000.
The plot: The Deering Tornado kids take a trip to California for a tournament and get hustled by some college kids for $ 100. Star player Michael Manning gets roped into a third rematch with the hustlers and winds up getting hurt before the big tourney.
Uh oh! They try to draft their coach, Bill Fuller, to play but the college kids refuse because he played in the NBA — just like the actor who played him, Reggie Theus.
KOBE BRYANT’S FINAL GAMES: 12 DEFINING MOMENTS WITH LAKERS
Ok, fine.
“Yo, Kobe!” Theus yells and in walks Bryant.
While the sight of Bryant scares two of the hustlers out of their sneakers, the overconfident ringleader says he’ll check him.
Cut to a montage of Bryant blocking shots, dunking and assisting on the game-winning shot — this is how you really know it’s fake — and a heroic comeback by the Tornadoes followed by a lesson: The high schoolers will only get back the money they were hustled out of, not any winnings.
“You take that money, you’ll be hustlers, just like them chumps,” Bryant snarls.
Yeah!

]]>Daily News Rangers beat writer Pat Leonard joined the podcast on Wednesday from Pittsburgh to preview another playoff series between the Blueshirts and the Penguins.
It’s the third straight season these two teams have tangled in a postseason series. The Rangers won the last two years, but the Blueshirts are running into the hottest team in hockey … without home-ice advantage.
Leonard explains why he thinks the Penguins have too-much firepower this time around, when we can expect to see injured captain Ryan McDonagh on the ice (if at all) and much more as we talk playoff hockey for a good 45 minutes.

]]>The post Nick Swisher signs minor-league deal with Yankees appeared first on Sports News One.
]]>TORONTO — Nick Swisher is headed back to the minors — and he couldn’t be more excited.
Two weeks after being released by the Braves, the 35-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees, giving him an opportunity to return to the organization with which he enjoyed great success from 2009-12.
“There’s no place I love more than New York; I think a lot of people know that,” Swisher told the Daily News in a phone interview. “I was blessed to experience that, to have such a great relationship with the fans in New York. It’s something I cherish very deeply and will have for the rest of my life. There would be nothing better than to get back there, to run out there and enjoy that again.
“It’s something I’ve missed for a long time that I want back. Those Yankee pinstripes run deep. Once you’re a part of it and you don’t have it, you miss it. I’m one of those lucky guys that gets an opportunity to come back and try to prove myself again.”
Swisher will join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, where he is expected to be in the lineup. He’ll play first base, outfield and DH.
YANKEES SEE BLUE JAYS AS TOUGH OUT IN AL EAST
The starting right fielder on the 2009 World Series title team and an All-Star with the Yankees in 2010, Swisher is looking to get back to the Bronx after three tough, injury-filled years with the Indians and Braves.
Surgeries on both knees ended Swisher’s season in August 2014, hampering him for much of 2015, as well. He played only 30 games with Cleveland before being traded to Atlanta last August, where he played 46 games for the Braves.
But the veteran didn’t fit in with Atlanta’s organizational plans, resulting in his March 28 unconditional release despite the fact that he was owed $ 15 million this season. The Indians are paying part of that salary as part of last summer’s trade.
“You never think you’re going to get a phone call like that or have that conversation, so when it does happen, you feel like you really don’t know what to do,” Swisher said. “I have way too much energy left to go home and sit down.”

Having had a full offseason to train for the first time in what felt like forever, Swisher was excited entering spring training. He felt a spring in his step that he hadn’t had since before the knee injuries, but it became clear that the Braves didn’t see him as a part of their future.
“I feel like I can still play; I think I can do this,” Swisher said. “Getting released at the time that I did was just bad timing but I’m just excited to be playing again. I want to get back on the field and prove that I can still do this.”
Swisher averaged 26 home runs and 79 RBI from 2005-08 with the Athletics and White Sox before being traded to the Yankees in November 2008. Initially acquired to play first base, Swisher wound up as the everyday right fielder for four years, averaging 26 homers, 87 RBI and an .850 OPS in pinstripes.
He signed a four-year, $ 56 million contract with the Indians after the 2012 season, helping Cleveland earn a wild-card berth in 2013. The injuries – something foreign for a player that averaged 150 games played from 2006-13 – turned the next two seasons into a major challenge, culminating with his spring release.
“You never think something like that will happen to you,” Swisher said of the injuries. “To be feeling good again, it’s like having a new toy. Going through all of that was tough, but you learn a lot about yourself. I think I’m a lot stronger coming out the other side.
“I’ve experienced pretty much everything this game has to offer and I feel like I’m in a real good head space and I’m going to do everything I can to get myself back to the big-leagues.”

Having earned more than $ 75 million during his career, it would have been easy for Swisher to call it quits following his release. He and his wife, JoAnna, have a 2-year-old daughter, Emme, and are expecting a second daughter this summer.
But Swisher believes in his heart he can still contribute to a championship team. The chance to do it in the place that he enjoyed the best years of his career was an opportunity he simply couldn’t pass up, even if it means going to the minors to show he has something left.
“When all of this happened, it happened so fast; I had no idea what would happen,” Swisher said. “To have the first phone call come from the Yankees, a place you think of as family, it was amazing. For this to happen during such a dark time, it makes you want to work that much harder, to train and play that much harder. I feel like I have a really good outlook on things right now and I’m ready to go out and give everything I have.”

]]>The post Kobe Bryant’s final games: 12 defining moments with Lakers appeared first on Sports News One.
]]>LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant has created a wealth of memories, overcome a host of setbacks and reached a multitude of milestones during his 20-year NBA career, which ends Wednesday night at Staples Center. Here are 12 key moments in the life of a five-time champion and 18-time All-Star:
Los Angeles Lakers general manager Jerry West boldly trades his starting center, Vlade Divac, to the Charlotte Hornets for Bryant, a 17-year-old prodigy from the Philadelphia suburbs by way of Italy. Nearly two decades later, Bryant has become the top scorer in the history of the 16-time NBA champion franchise, which happened to be his favorite team growing up.
EIGHT OF THE WORST PERFORMANCES OF KOBE BRYANT’S CAREER
As a rookie, Bryant badly misses four shots in the final moments of a playoff loss to the Utah Jazz, ending the Lakers’ season. When the team returned to Los Angeles that night, Bryant went to a suburban gym and worked on his shot until dawn. Today, he says the Airball Game was a turning point in his ability to handle negativity and self-doubt with hard work.
Bryant has 26 points and 10 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, teaming with Shaquille O’Neal and coach Phil Jackson to lead the Lakers to their first championship together. They won it all in each of the next two seasons as well, establishing the first dynasty of the 21st century.
Bryant scores 30 points in the Lakers’ 112-106 overtime victory over the Sacramento Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, ending one of the greatest playoff series in NBA history. The Lakers swept New Jersey to win their third straight title in the anticlimactic NBA Finals.

Bryant is charged with sexual assault by the Eagle County District Attorney’s office in Colorado. Bryant said the sex with a 19-year-old hotel employee was consensual, but his public image and most of his endorsement deals were shattered by his arrest. During the Lakers’ run to the 2004 NBA Finals, Bryant occasionally flew daily between his pretrial hearings and the Lakers’ postseason games. The charges were dismissed in September 2004 after his accuser decided she was unwilling to testify.
An ordinary Sunday home game in a mediocre Lakers season turns into magic when Bryant goes off for 81 points, the second-highest total in NBA history. He mostly did it on jumpers in a close game, hitting seven 3-pointers while going 28 for 46 from the field and 18 for 20 from the line. Sure, he only had two assists. Not a soul at Staples Center cared.
Los Angeles acquires Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies in a heist of a trade that swiftly ended a frustrating four-year stretch for Bryant, who repeatedly flirted with leaving the Lakers — even nearly for the neighboring Clippers. Instead, with the star Spanish 7-footer at his side, Bryant led the Lakers to the next three NBA Finals and won two more championships.
TEN NBA PLAYERS 35 OR OLDER WHO HAVE STILL GOT IT
Bryant scores 13 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and wins his first Olympic gold medal as the United States defeats Spain 118-107 in Beijing. After missing the previous two Olympics, Bryant proved to be an excellent international player, and he added another gold medal to his collection four years later in London.
Bryant scores 44 points against the Memphis Grizzlies and passes West to become the leading scorer in Lakers history. The franchise has a glossy history of talent from George Mikan and Elgin Baylor to Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal, but nobody played more seasons or scored more points in purple and gold than Bryant.
KOBE GUSHES OVER PHIL JACKSON, CARMELO NOT SO MUCH
Bryant scores 23 points on 6-for-24 shooting as the Lakers rally to beat the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, securing the 31-year-old’s fifth championship ring. He still calls it the sweetest title of his career for multiple reasons, including the Lakers-Celtics rivalry and the difficulties faced in repeating after their 2009 championship. He celebrates by jumping on the scorers’ table at Staples Center in a now-iconic pose.
The Lakers’ season began with enormous expectations after the acquisition of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, but quickly descended into farce. Bryant was carrying the Lakers toward the playoffs while playing more than 40 minutes per game before he tore his Achilles tendon in this game against Golden State. Incredibly, Bryant still shot his ensuing free throws in front of fans who didn’t realize what had happened. Once seemingly impervious to physical woes, Bryant was never the same. Three straight seasons ended early due to injury.
The third-leading scorer in NBA history is scheduled to play his 1,346th and final regular-season game at home against the Jazz. The Lakers are wrapping up the worst three-year stretch in franchise annals, but his fans throughout the world will pause for one last tribute.

]]>The post Vardy, Mahrez & Kante on PFA shortlist appeared first on Sports News One.
]]>Leicester trio Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante have been named on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.
They are joined by Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet and Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
Kane is also in contention to retain the Young Player of the Year award he won 12 months ago and is named alongside Spurs team-mate Dele Alli.
The winners for each category will be announced on Sunday, 24 April.
Analysis: BBC pundits pick their Player of the Year
Leicester’s remarkable rise to the top of the Premier League, seven points clear of Tottenham, has seen three of their best players rewarded for their fine form this term.
Vardy has scored 21 league goals and made six assists, while playmaker Mahrez has contributed 16 goals and 11 assists.
Frenchman Kante has earned widespread praise for his performances as a defensive midfielder, making more tackles (146) and interceptions (134) than any other player in the Premier League this season.
England striker Kane is the top-flight’s leading scorer with 22 goals, German Ozil has provided a league-leading 18 assists and Payet has enjoyed a superb debut season, scoring nine goals.
The award was won by Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard last season.
Everton duo Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland and Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho have all been named on the Young Player of the Year shortlist.
Last year’s Women’s Players’ Player of the Year, Chelsea’s Ji So-Yun, is in the running for this year’s award, alongside team-mates Hedvig Lindahl and Gemma Davison, Sunderland’s Beth Mead and Izzy Christiansen of Manchester City.

]]>The post 'Premiere two-guard' Afflalo likely to use Knicks opt-out appeared first on Sports News One.
]]>INDIANAPOLIS — Arron Afflalo wants a frank conversation with Knicks brass in his exit interview, which, based on his demotion to the bench and his comments Tuesday, is likely to serve as his exit from the franchise.
“I still believe I’m one of the premiere two-guards in this league and part of being an elite two-guard in this league is opportunity,” he said. “You have to be in a certain environment where you can excel and show what you can do. And hopefully that contributes to winning. I still believe I’m that player. I’ll find the best opportunity for me.”
Afflalo holds an $ 8 million player option for next season that, if declined as indicated, will give the Knicks enough cap space to chase a max free agent — with Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan, Mike Conley Jr. and Dwight Howard among the top members of the 2016 class.
Afflalo looked like a bargain for the Knicks when he served as the team’s secondary scorer under Derek Fisher, but the 30-year-old’s role and production diminished rapidly when Kurt Rambis took over.
YOU’RE THE GM: KNICKS KEEP ‘EM, DUMP ‘EM INTERACTIVE
Afflalo told the Daily News earlier in the season he is looking for at least one more big contract, adding Tuesday that he wants to land somewhere as a starter.
“I’ve been through so much in my career in terms of the opinions of how your game fits in certain situations and what can you do?” Afflalo said. “What can you do outside of when you’re in a chance to put yourself in position, you make the move that’s necessary?”
Afflalo signed with the Knicks last summer after a recommendation from Carmelo Anthony, who was teammates with the Compton native for a couple of seasons in Denver. He averaged 13.9 points on 45 percent shooting until March, when Rambis sent him to the bench because Sasha Vujacic brought more energy to the lineup.
Afflalo felt disrespected and groused over the lack of communication, saying Rambis had falsely told the media that there was a conversation about the demotion.
“I’m a straight communication guy. Just talk to me, tell me,” Afflalo said Tuesday. “To me that’s the key to success, the key to a winning culture — clarity and communication. When you have a lot of assumptions in the air it’s too much room for error.”
CARMELO DEMANDS TO BE PART OF KNICKS’ FREE AGENT DECISIONS
He said Rambis, who finished with a 9-19 record, performed adequately overall.
“Obviously he and Phil (Jackson) have a longstanding relationship. He has a lot of experience as a player and a coach,” Afflalo said. “So for what it’s worth, I thought he did a decent job.”
Afflalo is one of seven players on the roster who can become free agents, and the signs are pointing towards all of them taking that opportunity.
Derrick Williams owns the other the player option at $ 4.6 million. The former second overall pick, who played well although often undisciplined with the Knicks, said he won a gamble by signing a short contract last summer.
“I wanted to take a chance on myself and I think I really pulled through on that one,” he said.

If both Afflalo and Williams opt out, the Knicks will have over $ 30 million in cap space to spend on free agents. The roster is ripe with frontcourt and should prioritize guards this summer. DeRozan and Conley Jr. are probably the top backcourt players on the market, while Anthony has lobbied for the acquisition of Rajon Rondo.
Knicks starting point guard Jose Calderon said he’ll gladly accept a reduced role.
“I’m a team player, and if it’s better for the team, its great, I got no problem with that,” Calderon said. “I know my role, I know my weaknesses. That’s not going to be a problem with me. The organization should not be thinking that they have to start Jose.”

]]>During Tuesday’s game against the Royals, the Astros outfielder spotted an open door in the outfield wall of Minute Maid Park.
So, the slugger took it upon himself to remedy the situation — by karate kicking the padded wall.
Except, like Gomez’s bat flips, his judo kicks are also too much to handle and the wall fell farther out of position as the top padding crashed down on top of his head.
Gomez managed to wedge the piece back in and left the top section leaning against the base of the wall, but he should stay away from the construction projects for a bit.

]]>Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has devised a new method of playing baseball that’s working out for him so far, and it brings back memories of little brothers yelling “you can’t touch me.”
In the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks, Puig shot a line drive into left field and rounded first base on a dead sprint.
As Arizona left fielder Yasmany Tomas threw the ball back into second, Puig overslid the base as he tried to wrap around the bag.

Nearly a foot away from his target, Puig reached out first with his right hand, then his left as he evaded the tag of Diamondbacks second baseman Jean Segura.
The Dodgers outfielder was called safe — and upheld on replay — somehow, but magicians never reveal their secrets.
Coming off a disappointing 2015, Puig is also showing signs of a return to his earlier dominance, hitting .379/.500.655 with a home run and two triples in the young Dodgers season.

]]>The post Mike Piazza 9/11 jersey sale could lead to public display appeared first on Sports News One.
]]>Ken Goldin has never pulled an item from his auction to offer it in a private sale — but the sports memorabilia executive said he’s willing to make an exception to keep Mike Piazza’s 9/11 jersey on display in New York.
In a letter sent to bidders Wednesday morning, the Goldin Auctions founder said he’ll pull the famed jersey from the auction that ends at the end of the month for a private sale, but only if the buyer promises to display the historic jersey at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum in lower Manhattan, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown or the Mets Museum at Citi Field.
“This can be a rotating display,” Goldin said in the letter obtained by the Daily News. “Please note we have been in contact with all three entities and all are very interested in the item.”
The new owner of the jersey Piazza wore during the Mets Sept. 21, 2001 game with the Braves — the first professional sports game in New York played after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — will also have to offer Goldin’s consigner, who wishes to remain anonymous, a satisfactory price “based upon its potential at auction,” the letter said.
The jersey would be displayed for a “mutually agreeable period of time,” the letter added.
If the jersey is not sold in a private sale and returns to the auction the winning bidder would not be required to display it in New York, Goldin’s letter said.
Goldin also says he would also agree to a private sale if the buyer was willing to donate the jersey to the 9/11 Memorial in exchange for a charitable tax donation.
If a private sale cannot be arranged by 6 p.m. Friday, the jersey will remain in the live auction, where it has already received 29 bids. The top bid is at $ 161,000 and since bidding on hot-ticket items tends to get fast and furious as the deadline draws near, the Piazza jersey could easily go for triple that figure when the auction concludes at the NYY Steakhouse in New York on April 30.
Goldin said more than five parties have already expressed interest in a private sale, including Skybridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, who told Fox Business Network that he is interested in the jersey. Goldin said he spoke to an associate of Scaramucci about the jersey, who offered more than double the current bid.
“They were so close (to completing a deal),” Goldin said. “They should get this done for the city of New York.”
Vincent Piazza, the Mets catcher’s father, has also expressed interest in the jersey.
Goldin says his consigner purchased the Piazza jersey from the Mets about three years ago during a private sale. It’s not clear who had the jersey prior to that, although it is believed to have been in the possession of former Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels, who pleaded guilty in 2012 to stealing $ 2.3 million worth of Mets memorabilia after he was charged with tax fraud and possession of stolen property.
Samuels was sentenced to probation for five years and ordered to return jerseys and other memorabilia to the Mets as part of his plea deal.
Piazza, who will be inducted into Cooperstown in July, whacked an eighth-inning, two-run homer off Braves reliever Steve Karsay to put the Mets ahead for good in the Sept. 21, 2001 game. The victory gave New Yorkers something to cheer about after terrorist attack on the World Trade Center left more than 2,700 people dead and remains one of the most emotional and iconic moments in Big Apple sports history.
Goldin said the 9/11 Memorial is his first choice for the Piazza jersey because it would be the only piece of sports memorabilia on display at the lower Manhattan museum and because it is a good fit for the somber, sober setting.
Piazza has said he was disappointed that the Mets sold his jersey, which had been on display at Citi Field until recently. “It never should have left Citi Field,” Piazza said recently.
The Mets have declined comment on the Piazza jersey with the exception of issuing the following statement: “We can’t verify the item being auctioned but can confirm that our memorabilia group sold a jersey that meets this description, which was not authenticated with respect to game use.”
Bidders interested in participating in a private sale should contact New Jersey based company at GoldinAuctions.com.

]]>Manny Pacquiao tags Timothy Bradley as he coasts to victory on Saturday. Photo: Naoki Fukuda
Bob Arum once spoke optimistically of Manny Pacquiao’s third fight with Timothy Bradley possibly raking in more than 700,000 pay-per-view buys on HBO.
Arum got creative with his “No Trump Undercard,” talking up the undercard of mostly Hispanic fighters as if he was stumping for office. Arum even tried to juice up the promotion by playing up the rivalry between trainers Freddie Roach and Teddy Atlas and saying Bradley was a changed fighter with Atlas in his corner.
But in the end, there may have been too many hurdles to overcome, from Pacquiao’s anti-gay comments to possible fatigue at seeing them fight a third time. And on Tuesday, Arum seemed resigned to the show’s fate, projecting Saturday’s Pacquiao-Bradley PPV card to do between 400,000 and 500,000 buys.
The numbers are still coming in, Arum said, but at this point, that’s where the figures are headed. “It is what it is,” Arum told RingTV.com. “It is what it is. That’s all I can say.”
Pacquiao produced a turn-back-the-clock performance in winning a wide decision against Bradley in what he said is his last fight.
