Craig Sager says his leukemia is no longer in remission

TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager told HBO that his leukemia is no longer in remission. Sager revealed the bad news in an interview with “Real Sports” correspondent Bernard Goldman that will air Tuesday night.

Sager has been battling the cancer since April 2014. It has now returned for a third time, which the 64-year-old learned from his doctors in February.

Sager said he’s now in “uncharted waters.”

“I’ve already had two stem-cell transplants. Very rarely does somebody have a third,” Sager told Goldman. “So I have to maintain my strength so I can go through this.”

After his initial round of leukemia treatment, Sager returned to the sidelines for TNT in March of 2015. But after the cancer came back, he was forced to take another leave of absence.

Sager then underwent a bone marrow transplant among other treatment before making it back to the sideline this season. But now it appears he’ll be forced away from the game yet again.

“Still kicking, still fighting. I haven’t won the battle. It’s not over yet. But I haven’t lost it either,” Sager said. “There’s been some victories and some setbacks. But I still have to fight it and I still have a lot of work to do.”
